What programs do you use to tweak XP.

#1 Post by Mr_Roboto » Fri Aug 06, 2004 11:25 pm

I was wondering what programs are out there that allow you to easily tweak the settings in Windows XP. I am trying to make it a little more snapy or more like Win 2k.

Regards,

Rich

I'm using Tweak UI (Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP). It has some nice, useful options. Also check out www.tweakxp.com. There are some really good tips under "Tweak & Tip Database".

Another vote for TweakUI. One more that you can do yourself: go into keyboard in control panel and disable the repeat delay - much, much better for backspacing ;) I've also jacked up the sensitivity of my mouse, so it takes about an inch to move from one side of the screen to the other.

XP has a lot of option for customizing UI by itself: optimize for performance (in system properties/advanced); disable unnecessary services; disable system restore and so on...

On addition I use:
Microsoft Power Toys for Win XP
and
Xteq X-setup http://www.xteq.com/
and
Statrup_CPL http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

I use TweakUI and the various Microsoft Management Consoles (.msc) to control what works and what doesn't. Powerful but you gotta be careful not to mess it up especially the system services.

DriverHeaven's TuneXP is a great utility to go beyond the asthetical tweaking....this really increases performance by doing things like optomizing boot files, clearing cache, and enabling certain systemwide things that i dont think we have access to otherwise....check it out.
