A30p with new SXGA + IPS screen, display is incorrect..

#1 Post by whiteashcm1 » Thu Jun 08, 2006 11:20 pm

i purchased a ibm a30p on ebay for 113.00 dollars. fru# 2653-66U. this laptop came with a defective uxga screen so i got my hands on a refurbished SXGA+IPS screen part# 11P8206. the screen lights up fine and looks bright but my display is off center, like its too large for the display.. even the bios screen is off, its stretched to far to the right side of the display. i reinstalled the video driver and that doesnt help. one thing to note when i reinstalled the video driver it doesnt recognize the screen max resolution which is 1400x1050. the resolution adjustment in the display page will go to 1600x1200 but when you slide the adjustment bar there is no resolution setting of 1400x1050.. can anybody tell me how to fix this. what really throws me off is even the bios screen is incorrect.. pls help, totally lost...

I remember reading somewhere that the UGXA screen and the SXGA use different cables for connecting to the main board. I think that one had 4 wires and the other had 5? 3?.

That might be the problem.

your absolutely right, i figured out my problem.. you can run a XGA, SXGA or UXGA screen in a A30/p or A31/p but you have to have the correct lcd cable to connect it to the mainboard.. the one i was using to connect the sxga screen was a uxga connector that came with the computer.. i figured this out looking at the lcd parts breakdown on ibm's website and noticed every screen, xga, sxga or uxga had a differnt lcd connector part number.. i didnt think that would make a difference, but i guess the connector must configure the lcd correctly with the mainboard.. well i called ibm and ordered the correct lcd ribbon.. one thing i learned if you replace a screen and its a different resolution form the origional you must change the lcd cable to match the new screen and the inverter card only if it requires a different one.. the sxga and uxga lcd's use the same inverter..

yeah, it blew my mind that i won this auction for that price.. i guess nobody was intrested in a laptop with a fried screen.. if you look up that fru # on ibm support site, that was a pretty high end A30p.. i'm just waiting for the correct lcd cable from ibm.. the inverter is the same for the sxga and uxga.. :)
