Needed: Guide to IBM Thinkpad Software

#1 Post by kstuart » Fri Jun 09, 2006 11:02 am

Hello,

As I'm exploring my new T40, I'm encountering the familiar IBM way of making simple things incomprehensible (I once did contract work for IBM and before that, I used to work with IBM mainframes - I still remember the first time my program ended with an Error Code - something like "4897-126" whereupon I was directed by coworkers to look in a huge book of IBM error codes and found "4897-126 The program has terminated due to encountering insufficient storage area". Why couldn't they just say "Lack of Disk Space" instead of "Error Code 4897-126"? :D ).

Now I see the same sort of thing, as I am presented with:

- IBM Update Connector
- IBM System Update
- IBM Software Installer
- IBM Access Connections
- Access IBM
- IBM Access Support
- Access Thinkpad
- Access Help

( I think the easy way to remove all IBM software is "delete *access*.* )

So, it would be helpful to have a sticky thread with:

Software Name --- Explanation of what it is --- Consensus Forum Recommendation

(For example, my reading of the previous threads indicates that the consensus here is to avoid "System Update" and "Update Connector" and use "Software Installer" instead.)

MODERATOR EDIT: Moved to the Forum Suggestion conference.

You haven't seen the old HP lab equipment and workstation catalogues then, much less the parts' catalogues!

I think it is a good idea, though. :)

She does the things you do.
