help!!! my usb is 16v powered!!!

#1 Post by dorin » Fri Jun 09, 2006 1:30 pm

hi guys,

believe it or not the small usb port (not the normal one) is 16v powered!

please check http://bocanila.ro/usb/

i put there the pictures with measuring. funny is that the normal usb ports are 5V powered, as normal, whilst the small one has the same voltage as the power cable!!

i want to connect my ext usb dvd but it goes with 5V only (although i connected it few times it didnt burn- thanks god!!- had no idea till today when i measured the V) but with a triple powered supply i dont think is a good idea.

funny thing is that i contacted ibm switzerland and they;ve told me it is 5v powered! so my question is my mainboard defect?!?! (x40's of course!! )

shall i send it for repairs? c'mon all the usb devices are 5V powered! (the cable set belongs to the ibm ext combo drive which has 5v on DC and AC as well, so how the beep it doesnt blow when 15v instead of 5v are given?!?

any ideas would be more than helpful!

thanks,

dorin

Your X40 has two USB (version 2.0) ports, plus one powered USB port for "select" options.

It's for the use of specific accessories that require 16V, IOW don't plug any USB powered devices into it!

That's why the connector is a different size, it's a passthrough device for the power brick.

then i should be more than happy (and surprised) that my ext dvd writer still works! (lacie slim usb dvd)

but i cannot help to ask:

this usb combo unit is given as an accessory for x40 http://www5.pc.ibm.com/europe/products. ... enDocument

BUT on its documents it is saying
Power requirements The following table lists the power specifications by voltage level for the drive. The power specifications are measured at the drive power connector and are nominal values.

Power specifications ______Voltage____ Average____ Maximum
AC/Aux Power____________5V dc______750 mA______3.0 A
USB Standard BusPower____5V dc______800 mA______1.5 A
(full document ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/op ... 637eng.pdf)

now i wonder how a product which is supposed to work with 5V is given as compatible with an 16v suplier?! and still, how come my dvd is still working? shouldnt it be just burned when using a triple time the required power?

thanks,
dorin
