R51e installed with Vista

#1 Post by pizzahut88 » Fri Jun 09, 2006 8:26 pm

Hi Guys, I have just installed Vista Beta 2 on my ThinkPad R51e.
I had 1GB ram and Vista itself ate up about 400mb+.
Aero ran smoothly on my Radeon X200m.

Hardware issues:
Wireless LAN, Wired LAN, Sound, is all working fine.
Volume keys, Mute key is also working.
Access IBM does not work.
I don’t know about the modem.
For the display card, go to ATi’s site & get the newest Vista driver.

Software side:
Keyboard Customizer does not work.
(I used Key-tweak and that solved the problem, remapped ALT to my windows key.)
Power Manager sort of works, only battery maintenance works.
You can’t set schemes. They are all grayed out. No power control available.
Have not tried other stuff yet.

So how does Vista feel on an R51e?
My R51e came with a Celeron 1.5Ghz over-clocked to 2Ghz.
Vista isn’t sluggish but neither is it fast. It feels just okay.
Perhaps 2 GB ram would be better. I’ve been used to XP’s speedy response.
I feel Vista’s visual enhancement is all just eye-candy.
I’ve gotten over the excitement after messing with it for an hour.
So far, the improvements are all just fancy stuff . . .
Nothing I’ve discovered that I can’t live without.
But I suspect if I didn’t over clock my notebook,
running on just 1.5 GHz would be much slower . . . for my taste.

Manfred.
