(REQ) T40 Video card replacement/cooling

#1 Post by goen2tokyo » Sat Jun 10, 2006 1:22 am

Hey gang!
Second post already, eh? Time flies :)

My question in this post is about my Radeon 7500 Mobility that is integrated onto my mobo in my T40 2374-bu7 thinkpad. I noticed that there is a good 3/4 inch between the GPU and the keyboard (estimated). Ideally, I would like to replace this motherboard with a better on board video, but I would also like to know what cooling options are available to me to clock up the core a bit.

I am intermediate when it comes to overclocking desktops, but laptops is a whole new world to me due to space limitations and integrated video.

School me!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Well.. For the GPu upgrade you only option is a motherboard replacement and also your current fan will need to go and install an M10 long fan.

For the overcloking here is some info, and sorry i haven't done it myself.

Pay attention to mainboard exange ! If you take a look on the IBM website for FRU, you will see that for exemple lower part of the chassis is different from some T41 to T41p (for exemple). Also, mainboard costs about 700€ so in most case, it's better to sold the laptop and buy an other one (second hand).
It's possible to overclock mobile GPU. I already to it on my T41p. But it becomes very hot and the fan was very loud.

Also an advise if you plan to change your Thinkpad. Most time, low end models of T41 use for exemple a Mobility Radeon 9000 with 32Mb while the maximum memory is 64Mb. A Radeon Mobility 9000 32Mb only use a 64bits width memory bus while 64Mb models use 128bits bus. Downsizing the memory bus from 128 to 64bits reduce performances about 33%...
