According to Microsoft, they say an 800mhz CPU is minimum to run Vista. Which probably means you can run it on a 500mhz machine provided you disable a lot of the graphical features.
Due to all the graphical stuff, ram is the thing you'll need much. Which is where the older X machines (x2x) might have trouble becasue the max amount of ram you can add is about 600mhz.
The X30 should be ok since you can put in a max of 1gig.
I forgot what Microsoft recommended for XP, but I've installed Xp on to VERY slow machines (like 166mhz) and using XP-lite I got rid of all the junk that would use up the ram...I made a very quick and stable system.
I'm sure in a few month's you'll be able to do the same with Vista.
Although I have installed Vista (and Longhorn before that) on my desktop to try it out, I don't see any need (for the moment) to upgrade.
I use my computer to 1. Office work (Power point and Word) 2. Surf, & 3. Watch Divx when I travel. Which I am sure is what 99% of people do with their ThinkPads.
According to Microsoft, 800mhz CPU is minimum...
