ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 - 256?

#1 Post by codek » Sat Jun 10, 2006 10:12 pm

How does it perform against the x1400?

Will it compare to a desktop 6800 ultra?

can you upgrade to it with the 2623d7u config?

Will it run BF2 or F.E.A.R.?

It is around twice as fast for most rendering tasks. The x1400 is no piece of crap, but the x1600 blows it away.

It is much inferior compared with a 6800 Ultra. It is a little stronger than a decent desktop 6600GT, about on par with a mediocre un-OCed 6800GT.

You can't upgrade to it except by changing the motherboard. Just buy the T60p if gaming is that important to you.

You should look up benchmarks. fbrdphreak's site laptoplogic.com has a pretty good comparison of these cards. Just remember that the 5200 is the same as an x1600; it's just got different drivers.

I heard that the v5200 is like a quadro but I heard it doesn't quite as well as the x1600. I don't want to spend all that on a t60p just for the 5200. I just returned a dell xps m1710 with a 7900gtx(512) which would cost less than a t60p. I don't think it's worth it to get a t60p for about 3000 if the gpu is not even as good as a 6800.

well back to the drawing board. I currently have a 1953d6u and am returning it to get a 2623d7u but now it's going to look like I might be going with a 2623d6u and maybe get the next generation gaming laptop later. I want to keep the thinkpad because thinkpads build quality and aesthetics are #1.

Again-- the 5200 is an x1600. It's the same hardware. It's nice to see that you've realized that the Thinkpad isn't primarily meant for gaming, since you were bound to be disappointed. However, an x1600-equipped machine is capable of playing modern games, just not with all the eye candy turned on. People have reported playing Oblivion at various settings.
