Don't upgrade form CSS 5.4 to 7.00.0022

#31 Post by Prince » Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:53 am

I just installed CSS v.7.00.0022.00,a big mistake! too many bugs.

I had CSS 5.4 already installed, working ok but i wasn't happy with its performance, it didn't support folder encryption on other partitions or hard disks! I don't keep my files on C: where windows is installed, so I couldn't use that function. I activated the login function, booting time increased from 40 sec. to over 3 min! As I didn’t enjoy looking at my ThinkPad over 3 min. till it boots, I returned to windows standard login. Only used password manager function.
Saw the advertisement that you can create encrypted drives everywhere, decided to upgrade. Did it as they described.
1) updated the BIOS
2) uninstalled CSS 5.4
3) installed CSS v.7.00.0022.00
4) after installation asked for reboot
5) after reboot, wizard came up
6) wizard asked for a password seemed to me it meant my CSS v.5.4 admin password. and didn’t accept the old password! Neither did accept CSS v5.4 user password or BIOS admin! Looked at support website, they say new version use another way of saving password and is not compatible with 5.4 ver! I thought new version can’t read my old password.
7) in order to work around cleared the security chip.
8) after reboot, wizard came up, didn’t ask for password but finished unsuccessfully says “creating system keys” failed.
9) I thought BIOS admin password might cause the problem, disabled the Bios admin password.
10) reinstalled CSS, the same problem.
11) disabled Firewall and Antivirus. reinstalled CSS, the same problem.
12) used “cssplanarswap.exe” form step 9 to 11, I receive this error “The Clients Security Keys Could not be restored”
13) uninstalled CSS v.7.00.0022.00
14) decided to come back to CSS v5.4, it doesn’t install! Says there is a newer version already installed!
15) decided to install CSS v6
16) CSS v6 is not available for download!

Anybody here can give me a copy of CSS v6, I will be greatful.
Life is beautiful when you know how to look at it :)

CSS7 + AntiVir + ZoneAlarm -> Freezes up during WinXP log

#32 Post by macklin01 » Tue Aug 08, 2006 6:49 pm

Hello, and nice forums here. :-)

I just installed CSS7 on my Thinkpad R51 (1836-H7U). I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all the latest security updates. I use AntiVir and ZoneAlarm for security.

The entire install went fine, but upon reboot, it got stuck at the "Checking the status of the embedded security chip" message. There was no alert that a service couldn't be started or that a file couldn't be found. It simply got stuck at that message for over 10 minutes. No logon prompt ever appeared.

I restarted the laptop several times, tried disabling, resetting and enabling the security chip in BIOS, and also removed the battery/AC and powered up for a short time, as was recommended in this and other threads. All these attempts made no difference.

Interestingly enough, when I plugged in an ethernet cable, Access Connections did pop up an alert box to let me know that a connection had been made. Caps lock, num luck, etc. all responded. However, I never made it as far as a logon. i.e., the system itself was responsive, but CSS was stuck looking for the security chip and prevented further progress in logging in.

Fortunately, I was able to boot into Windows Safe Mode ( F8 ) and log on. I entered the Windows control panel and uninstalled both ZoneAlarm and AntiVir. Interestingly enough, I couldn't run the ThinkPad "Software Installer" or "Sytem Update", and the control panel dialog wouldn't allow me to uninstall CSS. I decided to disable the security chip in BIOS before trying to reboot.

With AntiVir and ZoneAlarm uninstalled, I was able to log into Windows normally (I had selected the option to use the normal Windows logon when running the CSS setup wizard), enter "Software Intaller", and uninstall CSS7. Since then, things have been back to normal. (However, I do note that ZoneAlarm has caught the cssauth application accessing the internet.)

So, in summary:
Antivirus and/or firewall software may interfere with successfully booting WinXP with CSS 7.

In particular, I experienced this with the popular ZoneAlaram and AntiVir software.

Booting into safe mode ( F8 ) and uninstalling antivirus and firewall software seems to allow a successful logon.

The CSS software and security chip are evidently too risky to use, at least on an R51.

So, here's yet another vote for leaving that horrible chip disabled and never installing CSS if you can at all avoid it. I hope that this post helps prevent this stress for somebody else. :)

Lastly, if you're only installing CSS to manage passwords, I'd highly recommend that you take a look at PasswordSafe, an open source encrypted password database. I've used that software for about a year with great success.

I hope this is helpful, and thanks for the great forums you have here! I may just need to stick around. ;) -- Paul

Similar problem

LS

I have experience yet another problem with the most recent version of CSS, v7.00.0022. The installation itself went perfectly well. There were no problems with the firewall (McAfee SecurityCenter with virusscan and firewall). After re-enrolling (I don't know if that is the usual way to update the software...) it appeared to function quite well.
That was until I went away and put the TP to sleep. When it woke up, it asked me to press ctrl-alt-del (with a new dialog box lay-out) and after obeying this command, I typed the password and pressed enter. After that, there was only a blue background and a lonely mouse pointer to look at. Nothing could make the system get out of this position. I gave it a cold reset and tried again, to see if it was permanent. And, it was. Problem is that I must not leave the laptop to go on standby (or lock the screen, which has the same effect), or it is the same as just shutting it down completely anyway.

So. Not a good this, this new CCS. Leave it, please ;)

Copying the "tvt_banner.dll" fixed that problem on my side.

Sorry too fast, forgot the target directory. :-(

Copying the dll into the path e.g. "C:\Windows" works.

Found A FIX!!!

#38 Post by getanewone » Wed Sep 12, 2007 7:26 am

I have had a sucessful fix on a Thinkcentre. I went into add remove programs and selected the CSS software. Do NOT use the remove option, instead click on CHANGE. Then follow prompts and do a REPAIR. This got rid of the error message and I have had no more problems.

I hope this works for you guys!

Installing XP Service Pack 3 led to this problem

#39 Post by tstroll » Tue May 13, 2008 12:30 pm

I want to alert everyone that I installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP yesterday (May 12, 2008) and it interfered with the embedded security chip. The status-checking program at login would run for a long time and then I would get the standard message: "There was a problem connecting to a critical service. It is possible that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection. Also, check to make sure that the TPM device driver is installed and enabled."

Fortunately, the standard CTRL+ALT+DEL prompt also appeared and I could sign on; I did not have to resort to safe mode to attempt a fix.

Running System Restore did not cure the problem. Fortunately, uninstalling Service Pack 3 did!

My computer is still under warranty, so I spoke to a LeNovo representative this morning, and he alerted me that he'd read something about problems with Service Pack 3 on LeNovo products. So beware of installing Service Pack 3 in its current iteration.

Instances of issues related to SP3 seem to be on the rise. However, problems appear to be highly dependent on your software/hardware configuration.
