T22 and Win Xp, 98, 2000 Which should I use?

#1 Post by wireman24 » Mon Jun 12, 2006 5:37 pm

I just bought a used T22 and I am wondering from what you guys have seen. Which OS would you recommend? I really love XP but I don't want to bog down the machine too much. I have all three Operating systems but I just can't decide.

When I decide to reformat does XP have most of the drivers I will need?I know 98 and 2000 probably will not. Or will I still need to go download them from IBM's web page.

Also can I just reformat like I do with my desktop machines?
I have heard that laptops can some times be a pain to reformat.

Any help would be great.

how much ram do you have?

Mine has 256 and it runs Win2k okay. I just can't decide if I should upgrade to 512 or not because I dunno if I would see any performance benefits.

Oh yeah, my windows 2000 installed just like a normal desktop install. Just head to ibm and get those drivers and you're set.

I also have 256mb of ram and currently I am running win2000 with no problems. I guess i will just install XP and see what happens. If I don't like because it's too slow I can always go back.

I use 2000 exclusively, on my T20-22 and T23 rigs,and I prefer it. (Personally, I can't stand XP.)

However, my older brother has a franken-padded T22, running 512 MB of memory and a 900 MHz CPU. (It started life as a 700, with 128 MB.) He runs XP, and loves it.

Like has been said, all the drivers are available from IBM, and work just fine. Pick your favourite OS, and run with it.

I would go for Windows Xp if I were you. It can support more multimedia features. Pop in at least 512MB to support Windows XP....

Why nobody recommends Windows ME? I think its a great OS thou.

I second the use of WinXP. I use it on my T21 with 512mb ram and it is perfect. The Plug and play possibilities are great.

As for Win ME, it is good if you like blue screens...just kidding. I had a lot of problems with WinME. I was getting blue screens on several PCs no matter how many times I would reinstall the OS. It just doesn't play well with certain hardware, in my opinion.

If you wish XP, make sure you have 512Mb of ram. Further, turn off the silly eye candy, and set up the profile carefully. Before you know it, you will have XP and it will look and feel like Windows 2000 except with Clear Type (which is really nice on a laptop).

I'm not too sure about the impact Windows XP's graphical advances actually have on the performance, I used to run XP Pro on my T22 and I did a lot of stuff on it, such as video encoding and the like... with effects on or off, I noticed little difference.

FEEL THE BURN! From the bottom of that particular laptop... right in the bawsack! eek

Another vote for Win2k here..I have it on all the 600's I have and one of the T23's I have..It runs fine, fast with NO problems..

I have XP on my T23,but that machine also has 640MB of RAM and a 5400rpm HDD...On older machines with limited memory I highly recommend Win2k....
1 T23 1.13 Mhz.SXGA+..512 RAM..Built in Wireless
1 T23 1.13 Mhz..256 RAM...
1 600e that now a 600x(500Mhz) with 256 RAM
1 600x(500 Mhz) with 327 Ram
1 600x upgraded to 600Mhz with 256 RAM

I've got XP Pro on a T21 with an 800 MHz processor and 384 MB Ram. The machine is not "bogged down". It runs marginally faster than the same machine when it was loaded with W2K.

The limiting factor on a T20-T22 is not related to the choice of OS. It's the 440BX chipset which limits the machine's hard drive access to Ultra ATA/33 speeds. The chipset used in a T23 will support Ultra ATA/100. My T21 is significantly slower than my T23's to boot, hibernate and complete other tasks which are hard drive intensive.

Once the OS is loaded, the T21 is slower than the T23's but, for normal office applications, the speed difference is negligible. The T21 takes perhaps an additional 1/2 second to load Word Perfect, for example. Not something to be concerned about.

A 256MB is just enough to run Win XP!. I would recommend at least 512MB....I might go for another piece of 256MB for my T23, but I'm [censored] broke now! :(

My friend just installed XP Pro on his T22 and one driver (for a PCI device, I think) was not provided by the OS.

I have 2 x T23's in my household. First one has been upgraded to 640 meg ram, plus 5400 rpm hard drive (my wifes). Runs like a dream using XP Pro with all bells and whistles turned on. Second one is used by my 3 year old. 256 meg ram and 4200 rpm hard drive. Running XP Pro also, but like a dog I'm afraid. Its ok for web browsing but thats about it. Hope this is of help.

Thanks guys
I installed XP and I think it runs great even though I only have 256mb of ram. But i don't do any gaphic intensive stuff like games. So for me I like it better then win2000. I was just getting really sick of win2000 not seeing new hardware. It seemed like I was forever downloading drivers for things I wanted to use.

Thanks again for all the info you have all provided.
