$130. T43 warranty upgrade for 2 more years, worth it?

#1 Post by bigtiger » Tue Jun 13, 2006 12:10 am

I have an express T43 model. IBM asks for 130 to extend the current warranty from 1 year to 3 years. Do you thin it is worth it?

I am just about to pull my trigger now...

IMO, it is worth it; $130 is a relatively small amount to pay for peace of mind for 3 years. 3 years is a good amount of time too. :)

Good point. Thanks. At least, I can get new keyboard and plamrest every year. I think I need to change motherboard within 3 years for sure too. :lol:

2 keyboards already cost more than $130, plus you might need to replace motherboard for whatever accident.

Really? 130? that is a lot. You can easily get one from eBay for much less.

I just placed on order from IBM to extend my warranty from 1 year to 3 years. Hopefully that is an worthwhile investment.

you said it's a lot...but you just bought it after recommending ebay? an ebay warranty sounds like a waste of time and money.

Sorry for misunderstanding. I mean the two keyboards. Nirvana said that two keyboards cost 130.

If you used a credit card to purchase the T43, it might have an additional one year warranty added to the manufacturer warranty. I know AMEX does this and some Visa cards also have this extended warranty plan.

Get the cheapest, longest warranty.

All laptops break. While IBM Laptops are sturdier than most, I'm on my 3rd Thinkpad in 3 years. The buttons keep getting stuck. I'd get the warranty - in fact, we paid to get a 4-year warranty on our recent T42 purchase.

Don't bother paying for onsite service, in most locales they don't have onsite people and you end up mailing it UPS to Lenovo anyway (and in reality, the UPS guy fixes the laptop at the UPS depot.)

$130 is a good deal, this is what I was quoted back in April 2006:

Code: Select all

Onsite:
1y = $199
2y = $388

Offsite:
1y = $169
2y = $321
From IBM, on my T43.... not sure why the price is so different.

My unit initially has one year and I am extending it to 3-year. I guess you already have 3-year warranty and want to extend, you may have to pay more.

those are the numbers i was quoted for a post warranty, not an extended warranty while still under the original warranty. i went for the 1 year offsite for $179 with tax.

I've had my T41 for two years and a few months. In that time it's been back home six or seven times, has had a new hard drive, wireless card, and motherboard. I think the warantee is a great deal. Further, given my experience, I do NOT want a new keyboard, handrest or motherboard--the ones I have right now work just fine, thank you. I don't see the need to replace them with new ones that aren't tested in use and proven reliable, just to see the new ones fail in a couple of months, just after the warantee expires.
