Please recommend a 7200 RPM HD for T60
I am considering of buying a 7200 RPM HD for a T60. I currently have a 80 GB 5400 RPM (sata). I am planning on buying a 7200 RPM HD and use the one I currently have as an external harddrive.
The stock 100GB part for the T60p is the Hitachi TravelStar SATA 7K100. NewEgg has them for $144.99 here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145005
This drive is frequently compared with the Seagate Momentus SATA 100GB 7200rpm drive. The Seagate often gets the nod for acoustic performance (it's quieter out of the box) and the Hitachi gets the nod for throughput, but with the Hitachi you can turn on acoustic management that makes the drive whisper quiet and doesn't reduce the performance at all (at least as far as I've been able to measure).

Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

I would go with the 100GB Hitachi; either you find it quiet enough or you can always tweak it with the Power Booster 2K utility Hitachi has. I have always stuck with the IBM/Hitachi drives and haven't had one problem thus far.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Hi, irfan,
I would also go with the Hitachi. There is a good comparison of the Hitachi and Seagate drives at: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2884
Note that the Seagate does come with a 5 yr. warranty as opposed to 3 for the Hitachi. I got three of the Hitachi 100GB drives, one as secondary storage in the ultrabay adapter and the other two for security backups. So far been very happy. I read somewhere around here about somebody having trouble with the Seagate in the Ultrabay adapter.
As for purchase, I can't vouch for NewEgg though I've heard of a lot of folks recommending them. Cost Central has the Hitachi 100GB SATA for $163.26. So far they've done right by me. The link is

Good luck,
Den

I'm thinking about replacing the 5400 OEM drive in the T60 with this Hitachi from Newegg. What does it take once the drive is installed to have it recognized by the computer? I have the backup disks ready. Seems like I have seen a thread on this but I cannot find it. I'm just blank on this at the moment. A quick install outline would be helpful.christopher_wolf wrote:I would go with the 100GB Hitachi; either you find it quiet enough or you can always tweak it with the Power Booster 2K utility Hitachi has.
