Serial Number different then case after motherboard change

#1 Post by fs427 » Tue Jun 13, 2006 10:32 am

Is there a way to change the serial number on the new motherboard to match the one on the case. Need this for inventory tracking to be correct.

yes, there is..
in the old days all it took was a Fn-key combination while in the EZsetup to get to the serial number and change it..

later, i think, it took a CE (customer engineer) diskette to do it..

while updating the bios on my T60p and X60s there appeared an option to change the serial number (i THINK, as i paid little attention to it)..

othere, more up on this subject will be able to help, but the question of ownership will arise..

which is why this subject is sensitive, CE diskettes are held closely by IBM and before anyone will help, ownership will need to be shown..

A BIOS update/re-flash has the ability to change the model number, as does the IBM/CE diskette; I am not entirely sure about a BIOS flash being able to change the serial number. The reason that you can change the model number for the BIOS is in the event that the system board gets swapped with another and you need to make a correction for the support software and the software installer to get the correct downloads for the system. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

I just read an article about a Hardware Maintenance Diskette that does it. Found it on the SPM site. Is this the same as the CE diskette?? I am an authorized warranty engineer for IBM ownership should not be a question in my case. If this HM disk is wrong is there a way to get the CE disk that I need??

RIGHT..!
model number, not serial number..
sorry for the foggy brain..

IRT warranty engineer and so forth..
if you ARE, then you should KNOW..
which it appears that you do not..

in any event, before ANYONE here will help changing a serial number, you will need to show proof of ownership..

i am locking this thread, now..
please move on to another subject..
