Celeron and Pentium M

Can a celeron CPU be replaced with a pentium M cpu?
would like to upgrade my Thinkpad R40 with a Pentium M if I can

Not going to happen.

The Celeron's in R40's are based on Pentium 4-M cpu's. You can swap with a Pentium 4-M, but not a Pentium M. To move to a Pentium M from a Celeron in an R40, you'll need a new system board.

Celeron's in R51's, for instance, are Celeron M's. These can be swapped with Pentium M's. In fact, I have done this on one of my R51's. It was quick and works great - longer battery life.
