screen has bad color -- typical?

#1 Post by tifojo » Sun Aug 08, 2004 5:53 am

I just bought a new X30, and I noticed immediately that the LCD has really dreadful color calibration. Like, if I open up Paint and draw a big red, green, and blue box it's completely obvious there's something wrong with the red, like a poster that's been left out in the sun too long and the magenta and yellows pigments have started to fade.

The screen therefore has an extreme blue cast. Adobe Gamma gives a white point of like 7500 K, and nothing to reduce it works without making it ugly brown. Tried Adobe Gamma (awful, awful results) or just turning down the gain on the blue in the Intel graphics control panel (slightly better).

I'm hoping this isn't the standard...should I send my notebook back to them to have the LCD replaced?

Hook the machine up to an external monitor. Do the colors on this display look distorted, too? Then at least your X30's TFT display is all right. The graphics hardware (the Intel Extreme Graphics is actually incorporated into the chipset) could be defective or just not properly set up under Windows (the latter of which should be quite unlikely on a brand-new machine).

Try to boot another operating system, for instance Linux from a so-called Live-CD, such as Knoppix:

If it's got the same strange look as your preloaded Windows (also when viewed on an external screen), something with the video hardware must be wrong, I guess you'll need a new mainboard then. In case the X30's TFT and the external monitor show starkly different results, chances are high that the TFT is bad.

Did anything ever come out of this? The x31 I just acquired seems to have a green cast fresh from a system restore though...I'll hook it up to an external monitor tomorrow to see if it's there too.
