problem? with 2623d6u?

#1 Post by codek » Fri Jun 16, 2006 6:13 am

I just got one tonight.

I put in the battery, attach the power cables and try to power on. I hear some noise from the dvd drive and nothing happens. Later after it is charged up a bit. It works. Is mine faulty? I thought you can run this laptop with just the adapter w/out battery.

On my 1953d5u, I didn't notice this problem. I just plugged in and it started up within minutes.

you SHOULD be able to run ANY thinkpad on just the AC adapter..

i frequently swap batteries while running and (obviously) on the AC adapter..

ok another thing with this laptop. the battery is stuck at 99%. Is that normal?

I have a 1953d6u next to my 2623d6u and the keyboard is diffferent on the 2623d6u. I can see the white pieces underneath the all the f1 keys on it while I can't see any on the the 1953d6u.

I really don't mind that but the startup when nothing came up is making me want to get a replacment.

Yes it is normal. The default setting is to only charge the battery when it falls below 96%. That's one reason ThinkPad batteries seem to last a lot longer than batteries in some other laptops -- they don't short-cycle charge. If the laptop stays on the desktop a lot you can change this setting in Power Manager to only charge below 60% or so to further improve the life of your battery.

if i would my lappy on battery only a 5% of the time should I charge my bat to 100% and take it out of my laptop and just use the power converter.

What is the best way for me? I heard that you want to keep using the battery to elongate life also.

If you set the charging threshold low your battery will not be charged until it reaches the threshold, just as if you had pulled it out and put it on the shelf.

For instance, assuming that the battery looses 1% per day on the shelf, if you set your threshold at 76%, your battery won't charge for two weeks.

I expect that there's a FAQ or something on this around here. Can anyone provide a link to info on good battery maintenance for the ThinkPad?
