Using Powerquest Driveimage 7.01

#1 Post by Steve Roach » Fri Jun 16, 2006 7:39 am

This is the first time I've tried to use this software.

I backed up a copy of my 20G drive to an external 300G drive (and asked for the backed up image to be checked against the original disk).

I replaced my 20G drive with a 40G drive and have managed to partition and format the new drive and then install Windows 2000 Pro on it so this proves that the drive is working. I then booted the T22 using the Driveimage CD and went through the process of selecting the image to be restored from the external 300G drive - the process seemed to run without any problems however I was not sure on some of the options to select when restoring the image(more on that in a moment). The T22 didn't boot correctly (sorry I didn't note down what the screen said - it was something along the lines of..."If this is the first time you have seen this screen"). I though I would be able to do a repair using the Win 2000 install disc but that didn't work because it reported that it could not find an installed copy of Win 2000. So I have now clean re-installed Windows 2000 and the machine boots and works much as I'd expect (i.e. I still need to install all of the Thinkpad specific drivers and other Thinkpad software). What's the best way to procede?

The options I'm not sure about are:-

Initially the "resize to fill unallocated space" option was greyed out (1st attempt) because I was attemting to install to the new 40G partition. I found that by deleting the 40G partition (2nd attempt) to create "unallocated" space the "resize" option is then available. The 3rd attempt using the resize option has still not helped.

I haven't got the option screen in front of me (T22 is busy using the DriveImage disk checker at the moment) but one option was to make the restored image bootable so I checked that one seeing as it was the one and only (primary) partiton that was being restored. Teh next 2 optiosn were to restore the "signature" (Help tells emthis is needed by Win 2000 Server and a couple of others but not Win 2000 Pro) so I didn;t select that one and then the "restore MBR" option. I didn't bother the 1st and 2nd attempt but I did on the 3rd attempt after I had opted to delete the partiton (to enable the resize option).

On the last attempt the boot failure screen was different to that seen on the first attempt - it said something like "problem with boot table" but looked more promising than the first attempt. Again I tried to use the Win 2000 disk to effect a repair but again it could not find an installed copy of Win 2000.

Can someone please suggest the steps of the process I should be taking to use Drive Image to restore my 20G (actual size 13G) image to a new 40G single primary partiton on a new hard drive.

TIA.
