ThinkPad T23 - HD Question

#1 Post by snowquest » Sat Jun 17, 2006 12:48 am

Hello, I have some questions about ThinkPad T23.

I would like to upgrade my current HDD with 120GB Seagate Momentus but I have no idea on how to format the new HDD.

Would I be able to just swap my current HDD with the new Seagate HDD and put the IBM Recovery Disk to format it?
I'm currently using Windows XP.

If I would like to copy my data from current HDD to
the new one is it possible without using external
enclosure or Ultrabay 2000? Could anyone please help me
on how to clone using acronis true image?

I'd really appreciate any help.
PS: I did search on tp forums all night, found some information but I just want to make sure I get the right info.

with acronis true image you are on the right way.

at first, my way only work, if you forget your ibm recovery partition. this you don`t need when you use acronis true image.

you only can do your hdd exchange without external HDD`s if you can burn your acronis Image on a CD / DVD. Otherwise you need an external HDD to safe your dada.

make a bakup of your current drive.

burn the bakup on a dvd

build in the new hdd. boot with acronis true image. when its loaded, put the image-dvd in the dvd-rom drive (acronis do not need the acronis-boot-dvd anymore) and take the bakup to the disk (make a partition as big as you like)

the remaining hdd-space you can format on windows xp.

My external enclosure arrived today. I put the new Seagate 120gb HDD into the enclosure but it wasn't recognized by XP on my current laptop
-this is what I got-

It wasn't even recognized by Acronis True Image.
Do I need to format the new HDD with IBM Recovery disk first?

Any help would be appreciated.

where did you plugged in the hdd? do you have an ibm ultraport-hdd-adapter or an usb-adapter?

windows xp does not say anything when you plug in an unformatted harddisk, but it works for sure.

go to: start -> run -> "diskmgmt.msc" enter!

then you should see a new hdd with unlocated space.

format the hdd or make multiple partitions. The first must be primary, then the remaining extended partitions with logical drives in it.

BachManiac: Thank you for your reply.
I plugged the enclosure using PCMCIA / USB 2.0 adapter.
Similar like this:

"diskmgmt.msc" couldn't detect the unformatted HDD.
Do you know what's wrong with that?
Thanks!

I know this problem, i have also such an usb-firewire adapter.

this adapter does not have enough power for the hdd, I don't know why.

Plug the USB-cable from your HDD-Adapter directly in the USB 1.1 port of the T23. It is slow, but it works!!

And then try "diskmgmt.msc" again.
