unplugging Dock connector to turn fan off doesn't work!

#1 Post by jkn » Sat Jun 17, 2006 4:50 pm

Hi all
here's a wierd thing...

I posted a little while ago about trying to turn the fan off on a Thinkpad Dock for my T22. I ended up with a second working dock, and decided to do this the easy way

The picture at
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Image:Thi ... nector.png

shows how by opening up the PCI card space the connector for the PSU fan is visible. I have done this and disconnected the small two-pin connector with a small pair of long-nose pliers. This is the same connector that I'd identified on my other dock sample as being connected to the fan, so I had a warm feeling...

I then plugged the dock and my T22 back in, and what the - the fan on the dock is still running ???!!!

Any clues what might be going on here?!

Thanks
Jon N

A)
You have either unplugged something that is NOT the fan (in which case I suggest you put theplug back in asap)

B)
The fan is connected to the power supply more than once as a fail-safe incase one power link is broken

C)
IBM uses dark magic in the production of their docking station
760ED All the way.

FEEL THE BURN! From the bottom of that particular laptop... right in the bawsack! eek

Yeah, I realise that these are some of the options. What's wierd is that this plug is indicated in the .PNG as being the one to remove - which implies that someone has successfully turned the fan off by removing this. And like I say, I had previously traced the fan wires to this point. So, I wonder, has anyone actually done this?

"Someone" ... could be mistaken. Might compare with a hardware maint. manual for the dock (if available) to be sure. ;)
