Transcend 1G ram $69 AR on newegg or Crucial for $150

#1 Post by baraider » Mon Jun 19, 2006 10:03 am

My T60 2623d6u is on order and should be here in 2,3 more days. Just saw one day sale on this item
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820208037

I know if I pay $150 for Crucial then I won't have much to worry. Just want to know what you guys think about this transcend. Is the price worth the risk?

That's a great deal from NewEgg. I'd jump on it. That memory stick has great reviews.

Thanks RonS,
What do you think about getting this 1G ram to bump to 1.5G ram or getting another 512MB stick that my friend wants to give me. He bought 1G ram and want to sell me the 512MB cheap.
Would I miss much going with 2x512mb instead of 1.5Gb?

It depends. 1G of RAM is more than most people need under Windows XP. However, if you're planning on running memory-intensive apps or upgrading to Windows Vista, then I think you'll want the extra memory. The only downside to extra memory, besides price, is that it takes longer for Windows to hibernate as it dumps an image of its memory to the hard drive.

Personally, I pay up front to load-up my computers, and then keeps a stable configuration for a long time (read: "don't screw with it"). But if the 512MB stick is cheap enough, and you don't need more than 1G of memory right now, you may want to buy it and stay with 1G total ram until until 1G or 2G sticks drop in price and then upgrade to one of those.

To answer your original question, if you are a normal user you *probably* won't be able to tell much of a difference between 1G and 1.5G of memory under Windows XP.

Thanks for the answers Rons,
I lean toward getting 512Mb for a 1G. It makes more sense to me. 1G is all i need now (i only running C++ coding, excel, vba, matlab, NO GAME or GRAPHIC INTENSE apps).
When I need the extra memory, I can buy it later (it would be cheaper by then). My t23 with 1G ram is able to run most anything :-)

That's true, but installing memory in the T60 isn't as easy as opening up a panel on the bottom like other laptops.

yea you gotta practically perform surgery to change memory on them right?

i just had to have a gig of ram or more just because it sounded so nice..but i finally realized that 768mb was enough, since i havent even used more than 400mb at my peak.

I think that's exaggerating a bit... I can put a memory module in a T60 in about 2 minutes. It's not that hard.

i said..."right?"...meaning im not quite sure. its surgery compared to unscrewing the usual cover to gain instant access.

nope. unscrew about 5 screws remove keyboard keypad and then you put in the ram.

it's pretty easy.

I'm thinking of getting a t60p with the ram already installed. What kind of ram does lenovo use in their thinkpads.. generic? or brand name? and if so, which one.

i dont know when to quit..

but knowing that you have to remove the keyboard furthers my point! 1 screw vs. 5 screws and keyboard removal. 10 seconds vs. 2 minutes. if it took me 2 minutes to change my memory, when would i have time to post?

Hi Baraider,

I love this forum and the TPs. I have been reading threads for about a month now. This is my actual first post.

I am also waiting for my 2623 D6U ordered from Costcentral ... I went ahead and ordered the Transend 1 G extra memory, for 69 USD and based on the review I read on Newegg I couldn't let it pass. When memory prices drop significantly in a couple years or so, I plan on buying another 1 G to move up to 2 G, but I'll just wait for that, no hurry, I should be happy for a while with 1.5 G.

What about a bag for your new T60 lappy? I want a sleeve, but I have a hard time deciding between the WaterField with a flap (39 USD + 15 USD) , a Timbuk2 Black Quilted (30USD), or a Tom Bhin Brain Cell (50 USD)

What about you, anything in mind as far as bags?

Good luck with your 2623 D6U !

guYom,
I ordered last Friday and faxed all the paper, I got a called Monday morning that my order is cleared. THey shipped that evening...it's on Fed truck to my apt now...it's great living near their warehouse :D
I'm still on the fence about the stick....Newegg still has that ram for sale...it's more of a several day sale...not one day sale... :D
I may get a 512MB stick for cheap....otherwise, I'll get that 1G stick...
As for the bag, I've been doing that when I first got my T42...I end up with a Powersleeve Booq

I got the Powersleeve 14 here http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=67
I went through several cheap sleeves before i get this one. Read my review of those sleeves here. You may want to read my T42 review to see what other stuff i bought for it. Read here

Thanks for the links to your pages -- great info.

I suppose our T 60 2626 D6U will also fit in the PowerSleeve 14, right? Snug fit, is it?

I actually use the Sumdex sleeve (the same one you reviewed) for my Samsung lappy. Bought it at Microcenter.

Do you use a backpack designed for laptops (padded)? Or you just put your sleeves in a regular back pack with no extra padding?

powersleeve 14 will fit the t60...still has extra space in it...so i don't need to worry about tight fit

I just throw it in a regular backpack and the PS14 holds well. it got thick padding.

Remember to buy the screensaverz...i found it's very useful to clean the lcd and prevent the keyboard from leaving print on the lcd

Thanks again for all the info. I'll definitely get the piece of felt for my screen, seems like a must.

I ordered a PowerSleeve14 -- was debating for a while between that and the WaterField sleeve which is getting a lot of good reviews here. I wanted something not too bulky, but also that I could use as a full case, I think from the pictures I saw on booqbags.com, the PowerSleeve 14 might be just that. So thanks again for your suggestions.

Just saw in another thread that you got your T60 today, congratulations ! You now have to update your signature with your new lappy...

I bought the transcend ram for my T60 on Saturday from Newegg, got here Tuesday. Put it in in about 5 minutes, much easier than I would have thought considering you have to remove the palm rest. Just be sure to follow the new instructions lenovo has online, not the instructions from the manual. Apparently removing the fifth screw the manual tells you to take out can cause the keyboard to shift, making it a pain to get the palm rest back on right.

Anyway, ram is working great, put it through 5 passes of memtest. I was surprised at the speed difference I noticed, but maybe I shouldn't have been considering all the software lenovo puts on this thing makes it use almost 300 megs at windows startup.

Thanks Mjgunn for the tip... just on time for me.

I got both my 2623 D6U from Costcentral and my 1G from Newegg yesterday. I haven't yet installed the 1 G, I was going to follow the instructions in the T60 service guide, I'll make sure not to remove that 5th screw.

Can you tell me more about this mem test you ran? I'd like to run it before and after I install the 1 G just to see the effect.

So far I have only installed the 2 critical updates recommanded when I ran ThinkVantage (Intel chipset support for Win 2K & XP and ATI mobility radeon fire wl). I did not bother with the optional updates : presentation direction, scroll lock, BIOS, ultranav wizard & driver, away manager, keyboard customizer, fingerprint, and TP config. Do you have any opinion about any of these updates? I saw somewhat of a controversy about the BIOS here on the board... not sure about any of the others.

Thanks.

I bought the Transcend 1 GB from NewEgg to upgrade my T60p from 1 GB to 2 GB. Unfortunately it did not work for me when I had it installed with my 1 GB Lenovo Ram (2 GB total). The system hanged a few seconds after Windows boots up and only a hard reset (pushing the power button for a few seconds) recovers the system. Both RAMs worked fine if they were the only ones installed (1 GB total). There is another thread in this forum discussing this issue.

I do not know if the Transcend RAM is to blame - apparently it worked well in other T60s. Running a memory check (when it was installed indivually) did not show any errors.

I returned the RAM to Newegg and they gave me a full refund - great company.

Anyway, glad to hear that the Transcend RAM worked for you. I am currently considering buying a Kingston Ram for $160, which explicitly says that it is compatible with the Lenovo RAM. I might hold back on that, though, since the price is kind of steep and I do not know if the Kingston will have similar problems.

Just installed the add'l Transcend 1G bringing my T60-2623-D6U from 512 to 1.5. No hanging here, the Lenovo 512 and Transcend 1G seem to get along just fine. Hope it stays that way !

Also it was no biggy removing the palm rest to get at the memory, just go slowly when popping out and putting back in the plastic of the palm rest.

Just have to mail in the 10 USD rebate now ... actually seems to be the hardest part of this entire process, where is the UPC barcode they want? Is that the barcode outside of the plastic wrapping or the one inside the package on the back of the installation guide? It's usually the one on the outside...

I received 2 sticks of this Transcend thing yesterday and I tested the memory overnight. Unfortunately, the RAM failed the test. It showed that 0.3 MB of RAM at some address (fffff0f something) was bad. I was shocked to see this like 30 mins ago. I am in a soup now. I have a new job starting monday and I was told to have 2 gig ram (it was a prerequisite). I dunno what to do now... :(

Dont buy these sticks. Get a piece of mind. Get Crucial. I am ordering those right now from NewEgg @150 each... *sigh*

Just FYI, Monarch Computer is selling OCZ PC2-5400 1GB SODIMMs for $77 with free shipping. I bought one of these for my 2623D6U and it works great.

I had lock up issues with my additional 1GB RAM from Lenovo. Each worked independently, but always locked up together. I decided to purchase the 1GB Transcend (looks like they had an easy return policy if I ran into any problems) and received it yesterday. Installed it and ran memtest overnight with no errors. So far it's been working flawlessly for me (using BIOS 1.06).

I'm RMA'ing the Transcend stick back to newegg and ordered the Crucial one for 150+ ouch..

memtest ran fine with no error....I did run super PI and got BSOD. Took out the stick and keep the 512MB stock in, ran super PI again and it ran with not a single error...

I had several BSOD when I did something memory intensive like create recovery discs...

Well, at least try...I'll try to convice newegg not to charge me restocking fee.

baraider, That's exactly what I did!!! I talked online with a rep and asked him things like ... Don't you guys check things before you ship? Now, you are charging me $23 as a restocking fee. What's there to restock here? Is it a widescreen TV or something which requires 2 people to carry it aroun? No matter how I look at it, I am at a loss. I lost RAM and $23.. I will never do business with you again in my life... something like that...

The rep (Marcela or something) said that she is waiving the stocking fee. I cooled down a bit when she said that... thats how I got back the $23 too.. :)

Make sure you run memtest overnight to stress your RAM out. Mine got error at pass #6 out of 12 passes overnight.

anyways, my 2 cents.. :)

the bummer is that I didn't know how to create a recovery set of 1 cd and 1 DVD...i ended up made 6 CDs...if you know how, let me know.

And when i tried to reinstall the set to recover it to factory state, what i found out is that it recover to a half-baked state where lot of devices are missing driver, and there is no preinstalled software...

I spent many hours trying to find the drivers from the C:\drivers folders....now every devide is counted for but my USB does not work any more. I plug in a external HD and the T60 is not even saying anyting...it can't see it...
