Setting Right Alt to a Windows Key?

#1 Post by Navck » Mon Jun 19, 2006 3:25 pm

I've recently obtained a Model M, and I've found myself missing the Windows key combinations (Winkey + E especially.) Is there a program like on my T43 that can allow me to set Alt (Or some other key) to emulate the keypress of the Windows key?

The Keyboard Customizer Utility; I have Right-Alt set as the Windows Key with it and all work fine. :)

Will it work on anything that's not a Thinkpad?

The executable install should, but if you want to do so on other systems...there are more programs that you might want to look into. There are some even referenced in posts on here. The biggest difference that they have is that some change the registry instead of running as a background process.

If you are comfortable working with the XP registry (I assume you are using XP?) then you can hardwire specific key codes to work as a Windows key. The only drawback to this method is that the key will be changed for ALL your keyboards, not only your Model M -- including your built-in notebook keyboard. As christopher_wolf suggests, once you do this, you do not have to run any utilities at startup as the change will have been made directly in your registry.

This method is not specific to ThinkPads. And it should work in both Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

One explanation of how to do this is available on the Thinkpads.com site under the title Windows Key Reassignment

I have done this manual registry editing on my 600X to remap the Right-CTRL key to the Windows key.

If you want to do more complex remapping, or additional unmapping followed by remapping, then you might want to consider this handy utility that will automate the registry editing for you:
KeyTweak

I can't guarantee that the scan codes for the Model M are the same as those of a standard PC keyboard, so if you run into a problem, you should be prepared to revert back to your original settings or search around until you find definitive information about Model M scan codes.
