T30 hard disk upgrade with seagate momentus 40GB 5400.2?

#1 Post by atland » Tue Jun 20, 2006 6:02 am

Hi,

I wanted to upgrade the hard disk drive on a T30, and purchased a seagate momentus 5400.2 40GB part number: ST94813A with a Ultra ATA/100 interface. The idea was to make a clean install of windows XP on the new disk.

I did following:
take out the current 20GB fujitsu drive
replace it with the 40GB seagate
insert a windows XP Pro SP2 disk in the CD RW drive and boot from CD.
The pc starts loading the drivers and at the point where you are supposed to install the os, it says it can not find a disk drive

Ok, so i thought the BIOS needs an update.
So old disk back in, download the latest BIOS update install it as well as the latest Embedded Controller Program and try the whole thing again.
it still cannot find the hard disk.

Is there any basic incompatibility between the momentus and the T30? Or is there a way to make it work?
In worst case I can always use it as an external usb drive if not...

Thanks

Is this a FULL XP Pro CD or an SP2 upgrade CD?

Sounds like the latter to me, can't be used to install XP, it only installs the SP2 updates.

Install the new HD, BOOT into the BIOS, make certain that the CD is the initial BOOT device and the HD is the second.

Open the CD drive and insert the XP CD, F10 to save your settings and restart.

Report back.

Hi James,

thanks for the quick answers!

Just to let you know, I have already changed a HDD on a dell laptop (also a clean install, after a HDD crash) with windows XP pro, no problems...

CDROM as first boot device: I have tried this already yesterday, the PC is actually booting from the CDROM (first on the boot list), you get the typical blue screen with the white caracters, saying loading scsi drivers, loading something else drivers,... for about 20 or so seconds. After this initial loading it says: hard disk drive not found, and thus cannot ask where to install it.

I have now put the drive in a usb enclosure and will try to format/read it from my dell laptop via usb to see if something is wrong with the HDD. Unfortunately my friend left with the T30 on a trip so I will have to wait to play again with it.
But I'll let you know whether I actually manage to recog./format the disk via usb.

kind regards

david

I have the impression there is something wrong with this brand new HDD from Seagate. I tried following:
placed disk in a USB 2.5" enclosure and connected to my laptop (D505), winXP did not see it, and PartionMagic 8.0 did not see it.

then I downloaded the seagate bootable diskette, removed the internal HDD on my D505, replaced it with the seagate, set to boot on disquette launched the tool and the disk was not seen either...

When I listen to the sound the disk makes, I have the impression it tries to spin up several times, but gives up at a point... and I bought it on Monday afternoon this week... expensive fridge magnet?

Any other test (but thats probably beyond a T30 forum) you can think of? Or just get a RMA from Seagate?

Kind regards

david

RMA that one and check with brentpresley, he is selling 40g 5400 HD's, I think he has 6 of them. If seagate gives you your money back of course.
