What SuperG minipc card for my T23???

#1 Post by terki » Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:03 am

Hello!

I was looking for a fast mPCI card [superG - 108Mbps], which one will be working with T23 2647-RG3??? I can use no-1802 patch. Will gigabyte GN-WIAG02 work with patch??? If not what other mPCI card do you recommend?

thx in advance

Super G

I'm using 2 different Atheros cards in our machines and they both work great. I have the 5001x in my T23 and the 5002 in my wife's A30. They both had to have the bios hack done, but work like a charm with the D-Link DI-524. We get good range and 108mps consistently.

bios hack?

#3 Post by terki » Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:29 am

Are you talking about no-1802.com hack? please specify - how do you manage to force your atheros cards to work with T23? I've read that atheros 5005 in my gigabyte card can't work even hacked :(

Is this hack (no-1802) needed for XP or just Linux? I've got a 2647-8RU (1.2Ghz, nonOEM-wifi) T23.

Thanks

Hack

#5 Post by schen » Wed Jul 05, 2006 10:52 am

The hack doesn't do anything for the operating system's ability to use or not use the card. It's just that cards that are not "IBM blessed" were not written into bios so it gives the error when the machine POSTs. If the card is working with the OS (correct drivers), you can simply press "escape" when the error appears and it will go ahead and boot the OS normally. All the hack does is to write the card into the bios so that it's recognized normally and the machine POSTs without an error.

As far as the wireless card itself is concerned, I can only speak to the 2 that I've had experience with; the Atheros 5001X+ and 5002. They work fine on my T23 and my wife's A30 and I had no trouble getting the right drivers for it.

I just found a bunch of sites that explained what the hack is for.. I guess I just needed to dig deeper.. I've got a couple sites with the .iso hack bookmarked.

ok, looking at the Atheros 5002/5004 cards and a number of different antennas I guess I could use (not OEM outfitted).

Thanks for the help!

I just got my IBM Atheros High Power 802.11B/G/G+ 108Mb/s Mini-PCI Card from eBay, ran the antennas into the lid (yes I know I read the signal reports about that) plugged in the card, snapped on the antenna leads, turned it on... I checked the BIOS and it said Network interface: not applicable. hmmm...

ok, see if it will boot ok (I ran the 1802 hack yesterday). Windows started up ok. I ran the Atheros Driver and Client setups. After a little configuring, (figuring where the WEP settings go), I reboot. Starts up ok again. Look at the Sys Tray, little antenna there... kewl! Signal strength excellent, check IBM radio icon... hmmm. says 84-88%, abt 3 meters away from the router... (yeah yeah ok, so maybe the lid really isnt such a good place for the antennas.. I'll retry the leads under the KB bezel) the signal strength is mid 80's but quality is excellent.. hmmmm I get the same numbers with the DLink card upstairs.. I'll play with it.. and Windows network icon says 54mbs, excellent signal, which to believe?? ID tag comes up as NB 802.11g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter (5002), thats a 5002 model? now it figures why it works no problem, not a 5004..

The daugther card was removed, no 1802 problem..

(addendum) ..daughter card reinstalled... and the dreaded 01c9 msg on bootup... ok, removed the daughter card again, no msg, fine with me..

I'll spend the rest of the evening walking around the house and in the backyard (but after sundown, it's still 111F outside) to check signal strengths.. I have a Xircom ethernet/modem combo if I need dial-up or hardiwred ethernet.. but so far I'm pleased. I guess not bad for $25 shipped. Now I just have to wait for Frys to have a sale on their 108G routers...

'Hope everyone has as easy a time with setting theirs up.

108mps Router

#8 Post by schen » Wed Jul 12, 2006 5:28 am

I have a D-Link that gets me 108 on both our Atheros equiped machines, but you can use a lot of different APs that will do that. You mentioned Fry's, which regularly puts AirLink101 APs on sale for something like $20-$25. I found out they use the Atheros chips which should hook right up! :D

If you want a complete list of what companies have the Atheros chipsets, just go to their site and there's a listing.
