Getting slightly OT for a sec, but I thought I'd vindicate tfflivemb2's message. There indeed is an ISO image of PC Doctor for the T2x systems but it's not at an IBM site. This was just posted in another thread:

http://www.mypchelp.com/~dsmith/ibmutil ... pcdiag.iso

Download it, write it with your favorite ISO-enabled burning software, insert in drive, power on, press F12 and select CD/DVD drive. Seems to work just like the floppy version (you still have to press a key to begin reading the next "floppy").

Hey Guys,
Did not know about all those Admin tools via Control Panel -thanks for the info!. I ran chkdsk, and it fixed the bad file (Norton Ghost had not been completely removed). No other hdd errors, got "healthy" for status. I have PC DOC on floppy now, so just ran it again and no longer get any hdd errors...
BUT, the freezing still continues. I'm definitely begnning to think there is something wrong on my mobo or some type of loose wiring or component. Maybe the PCB's as suggested earlier? In any case I'm looking to find a local tech that take the machine apart and secure all the connections.
Worse part is that my boss will be buying me a new compaq laptop on Monday, as he is sick of the time I've spent trying to recessitate my T23. He thinks my loyalty to IBM is misguided...I've never used any other laptop except IBM, and don't really care to venture out. But who knows? Maybe I'll really like the Compaq. Regardless, I'm definitely going to get T23 repaired and running again.

My understanding is that the ISO file that I referenced above is valid for all T2x systems, even though the linkname says "T22". A copy of PC Doctor which I have been running on my T21 and available at:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YZM3F

lists all T20, T21, T22 and T23 models. I have tried to check the CD's contents, but it appears blank under Windows XP. However, when the CD is booted in the T21, PC Doctor does indeed load and asks you to select the system option (T2X is the only choice). Loading continues and stops twice, asking each time that you "Press any key to continue". It appears that the person who created the ISO file basically just copied all three diskette images onto the CD. It's much easier (and faster) to load the diagnostics this way. I've been using my external floppy adapter from my 600 systems, plugged into a T series port replicator to run diags on the T21.

T23 no display on power-on and pulsing fan.

I had two of these T23 gems with this exact same problem and have been tring to get a handle on what was an apparent mfg defect. Then I stumbled on to tip # 1 see: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=28644
It sort of confirmed my suspicions. Searching further in thinkpad.com I came across this lenghty problem dialog. Using the info and pics supplied by tfflivemb2 I was able to fix both Thinkpads. The pictured inductor (coil) was poorly soldered causing it to break free when the MB is flexed. Both PCs had the same coil problem. My thanks to tfflivemb2.
Repairing this problem requires "watch maker" skills and a fine tip, low wattage soldering iron. While disassembled I also resoldered other components subject to coming lose.

Welcome to the forum!!

Glad to hear that this solved your problem. I still haven't had the guts yet to try the soldering. I am not too confident yet in my soldering skills. Maybe I will practice this weekend on some trivial items, then go to work on fixing that board, as well as a problem with reconnecting the CMOS connector to the board on my R40.
