imma newbie. got some questions. lets test your knowledge!:)

#1 Post by ENicolas1985 » Tue Jun 20, 2006 7:35 pm

i recently got a hold of a t20 and i am very impressed. it was cheap but its GREAT!! i just have a few question about it for now...

1. what does the 'thinkpad' button do? the one to the left of the volume keys.

2. how do i get rid of that sound it makes when i press the volume keys?

3. are there any other way to connect wirelessly to the internet with out using a pcmcia card or usb port? like make it internal.

4. can bluetooth be internally installed also?

5. whats the fn function for the F12 key?

6. whats that long rubber cover on top of the screen for?

7. is battery life for around 2 hours normal for it or do i need to get a new one?

8. can i use two different pcmcia cards simultaniously? or is the dual pcmcia ports for certain things only.

9. can i use the blue center mouse button for scrolling the internet also? not just for scrolling though documents.

THANKS!! i know these are really really basic questions but i have searched and havent found a thing about it. and it didnt come with a manual. THANKS AGAIN!! and when these get answered i will be able to sleep again.

Best thing you can do right now is download the T2x Hardware Manual from IBM's site at:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYM3F

I believe most of your questions can be answered by this document. You will need Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer to view the manual. You can get that at:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Also available from IBM:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4JSQHB

are software and device drivers. On the left side of this page you can find other links to manuals and user guides. And to answer your first question:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57556

That link explains the function of the ThinkPad button.

NOTE: All links to PC-Doctor software hosted by me are dead. Files removed 8/28/12 by manufacturer's demand.

You can download and install the program from IBM. :)

Either that or you can try and bind it to perform another function. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Download the access IBM program, or, somewhere on this forum is reference to a program where you can make that button launch any program you want (I forget the program though)
2. how do i get rid of that sound it makes when i press the volume keys?
There's an option in the bios, or you can use the thinkpad configuration utility freely available on IBM's site
3. are there any other way to connect wirelessly to the internet with out using a pcmcia card or usb port? like make it internal.
You can install a mini pci wireless card into the slot. However, this will most likely mean killing your wired internet and isn't really worth it on anything less than a T23. Look into an Xcom Xjack wifi card, it has excellent reception, and the antenna can be 'pushed' back into the card, out of sight when not in use.
4. can bluetooth be internally installed also?
Not on a T20, but, there are some very low profile pcmcia cards out there.
5. whats the fn function for the F12 key?
Hibernation. Enable it in the windows power settings. It'll take up however much hard drive space you have in ram though.
6. whats that long rubber cover on top of the screen for?
A failed IBM idea for a connector on the top you could attach cameras and a bluetooth receiver and a few other things I can't really remember. It's essentially a USB port with a weird connector.
7. is battery life for around 2 hours normal for it or do i need to get a new one?
It's starting to show its age (you could probably get a good 3 on a new battery) but its not bad at all
8. can i use two different pcmcia cards simultaniously? or is the dual pcmcia ports for certain things only.
Yes, you can definitely use both. Use one for wifi one for bluetooth. Just make sure you get ones that don't stick 'up' and hog two ports 'size wize' or it might be impossible to fit them.
9. can i use the blue center mouse button for scrolling the internet also? not just for scrolling though documents.
Two Ways to do this, either get the IBM utilities for the trackpoint, or get firefox. Either way, you win :)
THANKS!! i know these are really really basic questions but i have searched and havent found a thing about it. and it didnt come with a manual. THANKS AGAIN!! and when these get answered i will be able to sleep again.
