T20 2647- 41U Power Issue

I purchased this machine new years ago. I had it on in my car while I went into the store. When I got back in, the computer was off. I pressed the power button and the power indicator flashed and Nothing. Odd. I pressed it again, same thing.

I got home, connected the power and the same thing. The Power Indicator flashes only Once. The power (battery indicator) is lite.

About 10 minutes later, press and the computer comes on. I work for some hours and power off. Later, I turn it on and Nothing. The same thing.

I remove memory, battery, mini card, hard drive, keyboard. Look around and it powered up. Odd. I shut it down and NOW nothing.

Just the power indicator flashes only once. I hear a slight sound (near the fan on the left). It just keeps flashing.

Any ideas?

If the problem persists, then the system board is probably gone.

I've taken it apart and the processor has a little screw next to it. It shows an arrow and I easily turn and attempt to remove the cpu but I can't. Well, I'm not sure how so I'm back.

How do I remove the CPU?

While I'm at it, is it possible for CPU/systemboard upgrade in this machine?

Did the screw "click" when you finished turning it. You will feel it release the CPU. Then the CPU just lifts straight out.

Yes, you can upgrade the system board and CPU. You can use a T20-T22 systemboard as a replacement. The CPU can go all the way up to 1GHz. There are several threads here that will discuss, as well as give you the part numbers.

Don't forget the Hardware Maintenance Manualwill be your best friend throughout the entire process.

PMFJI, but what exactly is that supposed to do? Clear the system for a restart? Sounds like a cheat code used for a game .

Well that was interesting.. I removed the cpu, reconnected and it powered up. When all the lights came on and the system beeped because I pulled the CMOS battery, I shut the PC off by pressing the power button.

I pressed it again to turn it on and nothing... I had to wait for about 30 minutes doing the same thing and it powered up.

Why would this be happening? I did do the 10times thing the whole time and it did't work all the time.

How do I remove the CMOS? Is that a chip or something?

Actually, it was supposed to be hold the power button 10 seconds, not sure where I pulled "9" from?!?! Anyway, it clears the capacitors. It is a "secret" that is used to help reset the laptop, so to speak. I have used this method before on a T23 and a few 600Es. IBM even used this as a method to walk someone through potential ptoblems.

The CMOS is underneath the regular battery on the bottom.

Okay, this must be in place of the reset switch on my 600X systems. Discharging the caps makes some sense.

I have read the hardware manual several times before in trying to diagnose a power turn-on problem but that particular method is not mentioned.

OK... when you said CMOS, I thought you were talking about some chip that I've never seen before. I did take the battery out and the same thing.

Shh...I got the notebook to boot right now and I have all the wires hanging because I'm afraid to move it.... I need to get some things off the drive.

I disabled the hybernate so the machine won't cut off.

I did notice my fan isn't blowing...is it supose to be on all the time?

** One more Question: The replacement of the system board. Can I upgrade this machine to a P4 and does anyone have any particular place to find such items.
