Hard Drive Cloning?

#1 Post by skitty4gzus » Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:48 pm

I would like to upgrade from the 40g thats in my t30, but cloning the hard drive in there right now doesnt sound very easy. Has anybody out there cloned a HD out of a t30? What if i dont clone the HD and just buy a new one and swap them. How would I reload xp without the discs? There is a COA on the bottom of the case. What abou the patch for the 1802 hack i just did; would that have to be done again? Well if there is anyone out there who is comfortable with this procedure let me know. I heard there is a problem in the cloning of the partition on the HD?

Given the problems that you had with the No-1802.com patch, I would just recommend backing up your important files to CD and then perform a reinstall.

I can send you copies of the T30 disks.

No, you won't have to relive the no-1802.com patch issues. That modification was to the BIOS not the hard drive.

yea im definitely not familiar with that process at all. I guess most of my files would fit on a DVD, but what is the best way to do it? Should i get a usb HD and send them to that and transfer back onto the new HD? What about XP? How do i get that onto the new HD from the old HD?

the honorable tfflivemb2 just stated that he would send you t30 discs. they would enable you to put a new HD in, run the discs, and get back to factory shipped settings.

I don't know about the honorable part, but yes, I can send you the restore disks. The restore disks include WinXP.

You just need to use a burning program to copy all of your important files (ie. My Documents, My Music) to a blank CD or DVD, since you have a DVD-RW drive now.

Have you studied the Hardware Maintenance Manual, so that you will know how to remove/replace the hard drive?

no not yet, but i will read up on that manual when i get the chance. Yea, I had no idea restore discs would do that. Ive never really used them before. What about whole programs like NHC, will that just load onto a disc, or do i need a zip or something, maybe even an external HD?

if you insist on putting nhc on a cd or dvd, just put the installer file on it. why not just download it again once you do the restore?

cuz i already got rid of the .net framework software you have to have just to install the NHC. No big deal, i wouldnt keep that from me putting in a new HD. You gotta understand please that I almost have no idea what im doing. I know just enough to screw something up and not fix it, so i ask alot of questions. Prolly some dumb questions to some of you. I appreciate all your help though. I have been in some forums for other things, but none has been anywhere near this helpful when it comes down to it. I just really want a bigger faster HD and swapping them is a lil scary to me. I just want everything from my old HD to end up on my new HD. As long as there is somebody that can help me or at least walk me through it.

it came down to me buying a second HD adapter and acronis- then i ended up just doing a fresh install and configuring everything manually. i kind of enjoy it, even though im going to try cloning soon. just got a thinkpad 570 tonight so a new toy to try it out on. having to install .net would be annoying if it happened more than once.

i understand you have lots of questions, and theres no problem with that. just be sure to thoroughly search this forum and other sites for answers to FAQ. we all end up posting about something thats already been covered, but most of the time even if its the weirdest thing ever- someone else has had the same thing happen.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the files and settings transfer wizard native on XP.

Start  Programs  Accessories  System Tools  Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

makes migrating to the new install pretty darn easy

yea i try searching first, but it seems as though maybe im doing something wrong with the search cuz i never find anything that is really close to what im looking for. Maybe im not putting enough words in or not clicking the right settings or something? I dont have that many files or anything on the computer right now anyways so if restore discs put the comp back to factory settings with XP and everything than that sounds like the way to go. And programs like NHC i will just copy to dvd or something and install them on the new HD. Somebody said i just need to put the installer file, not the whole program? Will that allow me to install it without the .net framework files or not. Otherwise do i just need to copy the entire NHC program? Lots of questions and good answers. I am feeling more confident about this. I will prolly upgrade HD's soon.
