Most Popular Display Resolution

#1 Post by archer6 » Sun Jun 25, 2006 11:48 am

Here is something that I came across on OneStat.com
http://www.onestat.com/html/aboutus_pre ... tions.html

The most popular screen resolutions on the web in the world are:

1. 1024 x 768 56.15%
2. 1280 x 1024 15.79%
3. 800 x 600 12.04%
4. 1280 x 800 4.09%
5. 1152 x 864 3.90%

The most popular screen resolutions on the web in the USA are:

1. 1024 x 768 52.22%
2. 800 x 600 13.81%
3. 1280 x 1024 16.91%
4. 1280 x 800 5.05%
5. 1152 x 864 3.63%

Rather interesting.... :D

Rather nonsensical IMHO!

Conspicuous by their complete absence are SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) and UXGA (1600 x 1200), the second and third most popular resolutions according to most online surveys. I'm afraid I can't accept onestat's finding that there are more users of non-standard display formats than users of SXGA+ or UXGA.

WTH format is 1280 x 800 anyway? And when was the last time anyone even saw an XGA+ (1152 x 864) display?

Five minutes googling around or a quick visit to any of the stats pages so beloved by HTML editors and site managers soon elevates onestat's into the realm of myth.

I'm suprised that the higher resolutions haven't take a larger chunk out of this poll.

I personally will continue to use 1024x768 as long as I can. I have excellent vision, but for me it is still easier at this resolution. I have tried the higher ones and just wasn't happy.

I'm with James here; what on earth gives with those? The first thing I looked for was 1400x1050 (SXGA+)...Where is it? Also, the second thing I noticed was 1280x800 (Whaaaa??? That ratio is non-standard at 16:10, perhaps they meant 16:9?). I have seen an XGA+, rarely though and by that I mean I haven't seen one in *years* nor heard it mentioned much. It isn't far out to believe that 1024x768 is a popular resolution, I just don't get those others and no mention of SXGA+ and UXGA which are quite popular; at least popular enough so they would so up on that list. . I stick with 1400x1050 and some widescreen formats.

I initially use 1250 *800 (dell 8500).

Later I upgraded to 1600*1200 (dell 8500).

Now I really prefer 1024*768. I feel much more comfortable with this resolution.

When I need more real estate space, I use an external monitor. I use it all the time at home. The external CRT monitor helps me view the true colors for web development and graphic design.

So I am glad that I am among the 50% rather than those rare freak as before.

I agree i didn't buy this thing to be left out of surveys!!!!

I double checked and found this survey:

To the people who think that there should be a high percentage of 1400x1050 users in these numbers:

First of all, this was not a survey. These were statistics gathered automatically as part of a software package installed on web sites/servers.

Second of all, 1400x1050 is far, far from a common resolution. A bunch of ThinkPad fans who have the high res displays are not indicative of the general public, few of who even own a ThinkPad.

1400x1050 is SXGA+; that is a standard resolution. I actually can compile a list, if one so wants, of just how many systems have or have had such a resolution. We aren't saying that it should be over that like a rash, we are just saying that the absence of it (and the wide-spread UXGA 1600x1200) lead us to believe that those statistics aren't telling the truth. I, for one, can't see how one could indeed consider them accurate based off of, and now this is good, the presence of a 1280x800 resolution and, this is kinda weird, fact that 1280x1024, not common I grant that, is beaten by *800x600*.

True this isn't a survey, but just because it isn't marked as a scientific survey gives it license to be inaccurate. Using that as an exucse is not acceptable; unfortuanately, this is the internet where such things do indeed propagate like cockroaches.

The ones that Kyocera posted at least made more sense.

By the way, why can I not link to the testimonials on that site? I am wary when they claim to have testimonials from such places as MIT and Cornell but don't actually have any proof of such in either their press box or news section.

i remember when my family couldnt understand how i could see the screen when i first used 1024x768. it took some getting used to, but eventually i couldnt go back to 800x600.

where is this all going to end though? in a few years 1024 is gonna be at 12% and something else will take over...not ready for that (either is my computer)

1024x768 is going to stay around for awhile; good balance of color, feature/text size on-screen, and cost. :)

So you're saying there are more people using undefined resolutions on their displays than there are using SXGA+ or UXGA? Riiiiiggghhhtttt!

There's an awful lot of manufacturers other than IBM/Lenovo offering SXGA+ displays on their laptops, and UXGA is the most common default resolution on 20" and larger desktop LCDs.

Sorry, Onestat's figures don't grok!

Like it or not, its one of the common display formats used with WXGA displays, particularly in the graphics-arts-like application space.

Just because you aren't personally aware of particular resolutions being used much doesn't mean there aren't very substantial user bases for them in particular activity domains.

BTW, OneStat used to list more than the top 5, back in 2004 this was the ranked list.

1. 1024 x 768 54.02%
2. 800 x 600 24.66%
3. 1280 x 1024 14.1%
4. 1152 x 864 4%
5. 640 x 480 0.6%
6. 1600 x 1200 0.8%
7. 1152 x 870 0.1%

Cheers,

Bill

Speaking from my personal experience with WXGA on my Z60m. I find it exceptionally nice when working with a variety of applications, especially when working on the web... :D
