Proper way to do a CLEAN Windows XP install??

#1 Post by mtbiac » Mon Aug 09, 2004 5:10 pm

long story short - How do I do a CLEAN install of windows XP the proper way? I did it when I first got the laptop but it was messed up and I was getting 700pts higher with the factory setup in 3dmark01 (Same drivers, etc). So I reinstalled factory XP install, but now everything is f***ed up for some reason.... so I'm going back to a clean install where atleast everything worked. IBM is starting to piss me off if you havent noticed

thanks for the help

Download all of the current drivers off the Thinkpad Driver Matrix. Install XP/SP1 and then drivers. I find that Windows updates significant slow down my home desktops but I have installed them nevertheless. Try to do the most current drivers initially if possible. Old drivers can mess things up in the background (especially video drivers). How old is the computer? Does it have the latest embedded controller and BIOS?

Well, it should have a pretty recent BIOS so unless you're aware of any problems, I'd leave that alone. I'd give the IBM recovery CDs one more chance as it's the path of least resistance (2 hours of unsupervised installation and then you can try it out again). If that fails, do a clean install from an OEM CD and install all the drivers manually and, hopefully, that will work.

Good Luck...... and hang in there!!!

actually, I'm going to give OEM XP another shot. I think my problem was not installing ALL of the utilities that I needed. It wasn't really a problem, just caused my system to run a Tad bit slower than a factory IBM setup would run. However, it had MUCH more free space and felt much quicker for some reason. I already downloaded everything from the IBM site including the automatic software installer which is great :)

oh and with the IBM recovery, I have to be there for the 2hrs to insert the 7CDs. With the XP, I really can just let it run for an hour or so and then its basically done except for drivers, which is only 1 program now :)

and I can always give the factory IBM setup another shot...

thanks for your help, appreciate it.

I forgot that I had all the CDs on the partition, so I just did the IBM recovery. It's just about done now :) I REALLY hope it works right after this :-/
