768 or 1024?
Hi all,
I recently got a T-23 with 256 megs of ram installed. RAM for this bad boy seems a little pricey than i planned for. I'd like to install XP and don't think it will cut it as it stands now. Should i buy an extra 512 or will sucking it up and going for the full gig make that much of a difference?
Thanks

forget about the xp factor for a second- can you really get by with such a small amount of ram regardless? even when i use an older laptop with w2k, 128 isnt remotely enough. running virus protection and a firewall quickly takes up some of that 128, and then once you open up firefox or something like that, the memory disappears.
as to 768 or 1024, i think 768 is more than enough. i run that much on my r40, and with xp pro and an array of software running, i still have over 300mb free. 1 gig sounds nice, but it doesnt seem like you really need it.

My standard answer to a standard question: It depends. What do you intend to do with the machine?Should i buy an extra 512 or will sucking it up and going for the full gig make that much of a difference?
Quoting myself:
My T23's have either 512 or 1G of ram and there's no real difference in normal office applications.I've got XP Pro on a T21 with an 800 MHz processor and 384 MB Ram. The machine is not "bogged down". It runs marginally faster than the same machine when it was loaded with W2K.
------------
My T21 is significantly slower than my T23's to boot, hibernate and complete other tasks which are hard drive intensive.
Once the OS is loaded, the T21 is slower than the T23's but, for normal office applications, the speed difference is negligible. The T21 takes perhaps an additional 1/2 second to load Word Perfect, for example. Not something to be concerned about.
For about the same price as 1G of ram you can get 512 and a 5,400 rpm drive which would likely give you a bigger boost than the ram alone.
I used to be an anarchist but I quit because there were too many rules

Not for a T23, they aren't. PC133 chips are far more expensive than the PC2100 that you use in your T30. Those 256mb pc2100 sticks are VERY cheap.danage wrote:had 512gb in my t30, now have 1gig. don't notice a difference. smartest thing to do is probably buy 2*256 used on ebaym they go for like 5 bucks or so.
