just got a t60p
just got a t60p
I just got one off the amex deal. I have upgraded to this from a 1953d6u(didn't know I could get one with a good graphics card) to a 2623d6u(would not startup) then I went with this. Just got this and this has the worst build quality out of all 3. The middle of the keyboard is raised so there is big hump. When I type on it the flex where the thinkpad button is amazing. i can move it like 3mm. Is there a way I can fix this. I am definitely going to replace this one.

the hump is not only on the keyboard but where the start button, thinkvantage is..own6volvos wrote:Does the unit lay flat, close evenely without any twisted display, and otherwise feel fine? It might be that you got a crap keyboard, and it is a very easy swap.
Personally if there was such a big flaw on a laptop I was buying, it would be returned for an exchange of a new model.

Re: just got a t60p
I know it's frustrating, however you just got one that slipped through the QC process. I would return it and not worry, as your next one will be just fine. The odds are in your favor and besides I have ordered many, ThinkPads over the years and your experience is the exception. Since Lenovo took over my experience is that the build quality is every bit as good.codek wrote:Is there a way I can fix this.
I have ordered (and recieved) three new 60 series for myself and over 50 for my company and the build quality is outstanding. We have used ThinkPads exculsively for 10 years.
Remember that like so many other products these are mass produced and not every one can be perfect. That's why they have a good return policy. I feel confident that you will be very pleased with your replacement ThinkPad.
Hope this helps....

Re: just got a t60p
your right archer but I moved up from a 1953d6u then a 2623d6u to this and everyone but the 1953d6u had problems. The 2623d6u would not start until I charged the battery up for two hours and not even on standby. The screen hada wierd image that looked burnt in on the top corner of the screen and it would read the same cd only about 50% of the time. I don't want to pay $ 2600 + on a faulty machine. but I guess I got a bad bunch.archer6 wrote:I know it's frustrating, however you just got one that slipped through the QC process. Re: just got a t60p
Yes I thought of that after I pushed the "submit" button on my post. You have had a run of bad ThinkPads that is quite unusual. Just earlier I was reading somewhere on this forum about a person who's first one was defective and the replacement was perfect.codek wrote:I moved up from a 1953d6u then a 2623d6u to this and everyone but the 1953d6u had problems. I commend you on your patience and truly believe that your perserverance will pay off hansomely. Once this is behind you I'm sure you will be very pleased that you stayed the course until a good ThinkPad came your way. Having used ThinkPads for many years myself there have been those challenging times, however I am so glad that I stayed with the ThinkPad line as they are really fine computers.
Here's to your New Best ThinkPad ever...

Re: just got a t60p
Today, I got 200784U (T60P) through AMEX offer and noticed the same issue about keyboard hump and looseness of the cover near Thinkvantage button, which codek pointed out here.codek wrote:I just got one off the amex deal. Anyone else having 200784u has the same problem ?

I got my amex t60p finally. I have the same hump/looseness issue.irfan wrote:The cover on my 2007-c4u around thinkvantage button is loose too
After I replaced Intel 3945 and push keyboard back hardly, keyboard looseness around Thinkvantage gets better. But the cover hump between power and ThinkVantage button remains.
The hump is about 1 mm I think.

hey Codec
I had the same problem with the hump between the thinkvantage and power button.
The cause of the hump that can range up to 3 mm is that there is a misaligned clip at the back board of the laptop.
You can see the clip is out of alignment by removing the battery and looking at where the hump is in the back of it.
This is a simple fix. But involves taking out about 5 screws for the palm rest and keyboard. This will give you enough play to realign the back board clip into its slot.
No big deal - and certainly not worth the trouble to give it back for another.
P.S. Did you really think Lenovo would construct a laptop with a such a hump - come on give them some credit. It was the assembly that let you down - and not a big deal at that.

Hmm...just realized that there is a very slight hump on my T60 as well (200764U)! I also got my current T60 from the AMEX deal and another complaint is that the lower plastic edges are kinda sharp and it sometimes scratches my wrists when typing.
These are actually minor problems compared to my older laptops. I'm on my third T60 and although not perfect, I think Thinkpads are the best in terms of quality so far.

It is a simple fix by an IBM technician. I watched it being done. There are about 5 screws on the bottom of the laptop. You can find out which ones from a manual on IBM web sites.
After you release the screws, opne the laptop screen and the palm rest and keybpoard just lift up. From there, you can fix the back board as it lifts up too.
Hard to describe - but the problem is minor and very fixable. No need to return an otherwise good machine.

Here is a tip: Go to this page Lenovo and in the search field enter "Movies T60" ( or Movies & your model ) and a list of instructional movies will be listed. For example a movie to demonstrate how to remove the keyboard, memory, hard drive, etc. A very helpful service.

My T60P is pretty good as well except for some strange behavior of BIOS v1.07 fingerprint authentication procedure sometimes.
