You need only 2 parts if you are willing to disassemble/reassemble the existing top of your T43:
1) LCD panel (FRU 13N7046=Hydis, FRU 92P6760=Samsung)
2) LCD cable (FRU 91P6942).

The screen real estate that you get, SXGA+ is definitely WORTH it!
Once you have it, you will not like anything lower in resolution! It's addictive!
As to doing it yourself, there are ppl more qualified than me comment on it.

yeah i have the similar thought as princeatul,
the question is how much would it cost?
and what am i going to do with the old XGA 14" LCD ?

it seems like the XGA will become useless after upgrading to the higher resolution LCD.

Please comment.

thanks

I've tried a 1024x768 T41 in my household, but just can't get used to it anymore, after being spoiled by SXGA+ :)

gunston: I once looked for screen model numbers at samsung web site. I looked for it and found it there. I then found it on web sites that sell panels, was around 300$, they also guarantied no bad pixels for a small premium.

The hi-res 14,1" is definately worth it. The extra workspace makes a big differance :)

I got my T42s (2373-K5H) for its hi-res 14.1" (1400x1050) LCD.

You can see a lot more on it (especially handy on Excel spreadsheets), see more emails per screen, see more on your browser without scrolling down. Generally more useful in that it speeds up your work by not needing to scroll about.

But be prepared to squint your eyes, and a hunched back if you're not careful (even the IT dept people working on mine a few days ago had this the moment they tried to read my *small* fonts LCD--I thought I was the only one).

Cost of upgrading to SXGA

#16 Post by ZCorker » Mon Jul 03, 2006 10:31 am

I am a newbie and was trying to buy a used Thinkpad -- preferably a T42 and I was wondering what the cost of upgrading the video card is? Seems like most of the used Thinkpads that I have seen are all XGA. Where does one buy the parts for something like this?

I was hoping to find a T42 with at least SXGA and a 1.5 or 1.6ghz Pentium M Processor.

Upgrading T42 XGA to SXGA

#18 Post by ZCorker » Mon Jul 03, 2006 1:53 pm

The second posting in this forum listed part numbers for upgrading a T43. Are the part numbers the same for upgrading a T42 from XGA to SXGA?

Yeah; I have been using my T43 at SXGA 1400x1050 for the entire day and have yet to get eyestrain, even with my contacts and my eye-glasses. :)

I can vote for SXGA+ as well, an absolute must I would say... how do we find out what manufacturer our LCD is? (May be a dumb question)

Not on paper. Tabook says it's still 150 nits. Brightness depends more on manufacturer of the panel.

I just purchased a new board to upgrade my thinkpad t41 2373-xjx. It cost me 265 to upgrade the board to a used on. for a new one expect to pay 900$ from ibm. I saw some occasionally on ebay for 250-30 dollars. some for 450$. From what i saw generally if the model was a p(t41p) it had an upgraded video card

I have both, and you can adjust everything in the SXGA+ to suit your visual needs, opera web browser is great because you can adjust font sizes in everything. In windows if you go to display properties, settings, advanced, DPI setting you can adjust your font size. Something I discovered by researching this issue is: take a regular ruler, and match the 1" setting on the DPI chart to the 1" on the ruler, (click and drag on the screen ruler to change the setting) this will give you a good resolution, if you don't like it move up or down from there.

What is the highest res that can be put in the t43?

How much for the swap?

I have another one that is dead but the screen still is good, how do I remove and install?

thanks everyone
