I've had an X41T for some time without major issue but yesterday it suddenly decided that it was no longer a notebook (sorta). Suddenly missing is any support for standby mode. No option to enter standby or hibernation in the Shutdown menu, no hibernation tab anymore in Power Options (although hibernation is an option for lid closed, go figure). If I launch IBM's Power Manager the options seem to be there for standby and hibernate but do not work. Fn F4 no longer works. In device manager I see lots of ACPI devices installed under System Devices and the processor is shown as ACPI Uniprocessor PC and Pentium M (both of which which are correct). I have tried to rediscover hardware and have tried settting BIOS to default without success. I've been able to uncover no good way to fix this other than a reinstall of the OS. There was one MS KB article that recommending uninstalling Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System from the System Devices section, rebooting, and letting the OS rediscover/install it but that generates BSODs galore during boot with subsequent Safe Mode boot screens. Reverting back to last known good configuration saved my bacon.
Any ideas out there? I'm outta ideas, so all good and silly ones welcomed, trust me!

Somehow the advance power management feature has been disabled. This can be re-enabled in the power settings. If for some reason this is not availible or enabled and still no standby. Then either the problem you have before is the culprut, or something seriously has gome wrong with the power management chip on the motherboard. I don't anyway else on how to fix the problem.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

While I suppose it could be a hardware issue, I would still tend to suspect a software problem first. I had Standby quit working on my T42 once. Using the Product Recovery Discs to reinstall the factory image got it working again for me.
I would try Windows System Restore first. That works something like Last Known Good Configuration, but it lets you go back farther in time. Go to Start > Help and Support > Pick a task > Undo changes to your computer with System Restore. In my case, System Restore was broken as well, so I did not have that option.
If System Restore doesn't work, then I would reinstall the OS. First choice would be to boot into Rescue and Recovery and choose to Restore Factory Contents. Second choice would be to use the Product Recovery Disc set. I chose the Product Recovery Disc set over booting into Rescue and Recovery from the hard drive, simply because I wanted to test them.
