Are you a member of the Dead Pixel club?

#1 Post by esquire » Tue Aug 10, 2004 8:07 am

I discovered a few days ago that I have ONE dead pixel on my new T42 DXU 15inch. Its strange though, it seems that its only dead for red. It shows all the other colours (when I run the LCD test). I figure its not so bad though considering I can only spot it if there is pure red in that exact spot. Heh, atleast it isn't totally dead.

So how common is this? Do most LCDs from IBM now have atleast one dead pixel? It is like a 50/50 chance?

Stuck not dead...

#2 Post by atlacatl » Tue Aug 10, 2004 8:11 am

I'm part of the club, but only if I look for it really hard.

My "ghost" pixel only shows when the background is in deep blue and then is half grey/red.

I have a stuck red pixel in the bottom left hand quadrant and a ghostly blue nearby that usually works but sometimes doesn't.

Dead (unlit, black) pixels don't bother me that much if they are at the margins of a screen. Stuck pixels are worse because they are more easily visible.

I don't know what the % is for panels with defects, but it seems much higher today than it was in 1999.

I'd advise all ThinkPad purchasers to buy from IBM (30-day no questions return period) or Bill (offers dead/stuck pixel check for $100). It's not worth it to drop $2000 on a new machine only to find that it has defects in the display.

My old 600e had a blue stuck pixel at the very bottom of the screen where it wasn't obvious. I bought it used for a steal (hmmmmm..... maybe a bad choice of words) back in 2000 so I didn't worry about it.

My fist T40 had a white (all three colors) pixel stuck on right in the middle of the screen so I sent i back. Replacement was fine. My T41 was OK 6 months ago but now has a stuck red pixel in the middle of the screen. It's hadly noticeable - looks like a very small dust spec - so it could have been there from new. Seems that stuck on (white) is the worst, blue/green next worst, red and black (dead) are the least noticeable.

Hope the new T42 (on order) is clean :?

Single stuck pixel "on", white in color thankfully, only see it @ bootup usually.

The graph may represent the porcentage of dead pixels amoung ThikPads.com members, but I wonder how many of those with no-fault pixels is because they previously exchanged a dead-pixel laptop.

If you have dead pixels only in certain colors, you have a dead sub-pixel. For a pixel to replicate any color it must have at least a set of RGB primary colors. These, along with backlighting make for the larger complete pixel that you see.

Of the 20 or so T40/T40p/T41/T42/T42p/R50p systems that I've worked with since October, I've run into 5 units that have had at least one dead or stuck pixel: 1 T40p I returned, 1 T42 I returned, 2 T41, and 1 T42p. The later were part of an evaluation process at a vendor. So in my limited experience, I'm seeing a defect rate of about 20-25% across 20 or so notebook computers. Both ID Tech and Samsung had dead/stuck pixels. In fact, for my personal use, only dead/stuck pixels are deal-breakers for me... I can live with keyboard, palmrest, battery, fan, heat, and other miscellaneous problems (even though I did fix said problems with my T40p and T42p). lol.

I had 1 stuck on bright red - but it bothered me so I sent it back and get a new machine.

I have one at the bottom, little towards right corner, during my first boot for the first time.

I asked the dealer and he replied that I may get a more dead pixel if I try to replace my display. What else I can do? I decided to live with it. BTW, it's my brand new T41p!

At my work place we have had 2 out of 4 T42 systems come in with bad pixels. These were all 2378 FVU models. Hopefully we just had unusually bad luck. It is too small a sample to draw any conclusions from.

We also have about 35 of the R40 model and about 2 or 3 of those had noticeable dead pixels. I didn't do a complete dead pixel search on the R40 machines though. On those ones I just noticed a pixel problem if it was visible during boot up or during Windows configuration.

How can I test if my laptop has a dead pixel? Is there software I can run?

If you haven't done a clean install or removed it the PC-Doctor software that IBM loads on the laptop can be used to check for dead pixels.

Go to Start, All Programs, PC-Doctor for Windows, PC-Doctor

In the program go to video tests and test the default monitor.

I got my new T42 2379DXU three days ago. Didn't notice the dead pixel the first day. Ran the screen check on the second day and uhhhhhhhhh I found one dead pixel!! It seems weird though, it works fine on blue, Red and Black (off), and only shows up on white and Green.

On Red works fine.
On Blue works fine.
On white, it shows up as a tiny light brown pixel.
On Green, it shows up as a tiny dark brown pixel.

Since then, every time I turn on the PC, I automatically start looking for it! I'm debating whether to return the machine or not...

Be careful with this! I ran it once and one pixel looked dead white on my screen in green, blue and red. But when I reran the test in a fresh instance of Firefox, the "dead" pixel worked just fine. I'm not sure you can trust this little program.

Thanks for the info! I ran the check and the "shadowing/ Response Time check" results weren't that fascinating! There was a little white shadow box trailing the actual moving white box. Even my 6 yr old 17" CRT looked much better than the 15" T42. :-(

Please give me an idea on what Fairfox is. Thanks very much!

I'm running Mozilla Firefox as my browser instead of Internet Explorer. That's all. It's available at www.mozilla.org. It's got a few new features and it's supposed to be more secure. Most importantly, it's not that common yet, so the virus writers won't be trying to break in as much.

My first thinkpad t42 (2378fvu) had two dead pixels which I then sent back for replacement. Thankfully the one they sent back has none ...
