(for a box-new Z60.) Didn't they used to hand these out free, if asked?

Comment from rep: "What do you need that for? There's a recovery right on the machine?"

Uhhhhh... A sigh doesn't begin to express it.

If you have a CDRW or CDRW/DVDRW drive, Rescue and Recovery may be used to create a personalized backup on CDs or DVDs, that includes all of your added software, setting changes, and data files.
You need to create 1 boot cd, and then 6 (i think) install cd's or 1 dvd. If you do this before you install any aditional applications, the result will be the same as a recovery cdset.

they probably dont hand them out because all of the forum members calling up and asking for them for free!

Not entirely accurate.

You can make a set of the Product Recovery discs as mentioned above (you can only do this once until you restore to factory state). However this set contains the factory install without any added software or setting changes.

You can also use Rescue and Recovery to make a backup of your hard drive any time you like. This backup will contain all your added software and settings. You can restore this backup to your same hard drive or another drive. In certain situations you will need to have a Rescue Media CD to be able to restore your backup to another drive, or a drive that you cannot boot into Rescue and Recovery. You can make a Rescue Media CD any time you like.

The Product Recovery discs will restore your Rescue and Recovery service partition as well as your Windows partition (C: partition). The Rescue and Recovery backup will only restore your Windows partitions.

Really, you can make your own set if you have a burner; then you can do whatever you want to the on-board partition. You can also recover from the on-board partition itself without the need for the R&R set.

So what's the drill? I remember the last set of disks (+R) I made for an IBM wound up with practically nothing on the first, bootable disk. This secretly could have been a CD, rather than a DVD.

Any advantage in using a CD blank for the first disk?

And do you think Lenovo would fall for the old "Sony trick?" (Sony really did have a flakey recovery-disk build at one point. You just had to suggest a problem and you would be inundated with free 7-CD packages.)

I know they have been charging for them for a while, I was able to get a free set for my new ordered from Lenovo t60 that gave me a freakin error msg when I tried to make a set.

It's pretty simple to make them just follow the instructions for "create recovery cd's.

why no guys use Ghost to burns the recovery CD ?
it's easy and convenient~~ only one cd is OK
R&R will backup the OS with one DVD and a CD,OR 7CD

I called Lenovo support last night. 5 minute wait, got to a person, talked a couple minutes and convinced them that both my recovery CD creation program and backup partition were not working (which actually the case). The set of recovery CDs should be in the mail now, completely free.

i just got a new hard drive through the warranty, and they asked if i wanted the cds...um, of course!

i understand that is a different situation than simply asking outright for them- but it gave me some hope. how else would i have installed the OS anyway.

Just got all eight of my CDs. Seems they overnighted them to me. Really good service from Lenovo so far. They will have to do something pretty bad to disappoint me...
