add thinkpads you own to info under screen name when posting

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Thu Jun 29, 2006 9:51 pm

not the most succinct subject but i think its a good idea. hopefully it hasnt already been brought up. a lot of people use some sense and add the thinkpads they own to their signature- but there seem to be just as many frequent users that dont.

would adding a "Thinkpads" column do anything to aid people with their questions? every day i see someone ask a question, but they dont have a signature with any info in it, and dont give the information unless asked.

Half the users here switch or add different Thinkpads more often than my roommate here in the hotel changes his socks!

I am sure that the admins aren't going to want to get PMs left and right from members that have either added, changed or rec'd their first Thinkpad.

For those with quite a few different models, such as myself, you'd still never know which laptop I was talking about in a post, unless they were thorough with their posts.

I think that the best suggestion is that people think through their posts before posting, so that they provide as much information as possible.

too bad i cant think for other people!

i wasnt trying to involve anyone gettings PMs- simply an addition to the profile section that each user can edit on their own.

oh well, it was a thought.

For some of us, there isn't enough room!

BTW, there's no reason why your machine listing couldn't fit on just TWO lines.

When sigs start to take up more room in a topic than what's posted in a response, strange things begin to happen and sigs get mysteriously and summarily truncated.

If anything, people should think through their posts beforehand and not let us guess which model Thinkpad they are referring to even with the signature info (although that could get *huge*).

I personally would be in favor of having the ThinkPad or in cases of owning multiple ThinkPads, the primary one to be listed in info just like location but the signature block seems to be addressing this issue quite fine. Many people here will either from the start or after seeing how many other people do so add their collection to their sig so we really don't have much need for signature block in my opinion. In fact, the ONLY person in this thread here NOT following precident (at the moment) is James.

I am pretty sure there is a reason for that. ;) :)

If you look at the post above where I pulled this quote, you will notice that if his ThinkPad info was added to the left instead of being where it is, it would add to the length of the post. That particular post would take up more room in the thread.

That said, I like the way dsigma6 used small text to fit the ThinkPad info into his sig. It's there if you want to see it, but it doesn't stand out so much; especially in a small post.

I personally never added my ThinkPad info to my sig, because I saw it as a bragging rights sort of thing. [Of course now that the T42 is getting a little dated, there is not so much bragging to do.] I prefer to add the fact that I have a T42 when it seems relevant and/or necessary to my post. But that's just me.

I do agree that anyone posting a question needs to provide the hardware and/or software info so a responder can give a reasonable answer. It is a little frustrating when the poster does not provide the background information from the get go. He may say: "I can't connect to my wireless router. What do I do?". Why should I have to ask which ThinkPad, which wireless card, which router, etc. when the poster should have provided that from the beginning? I do realize however that there are newbies who really are clueless, so we should cut them some slack and try to help if we can. :)

i love it! as to people bragging in their signatures, it certainly happens. but in my case i have a 3 year old laptop and two that are probably 6-7 years old. i just like it because i'll see someone with the same model and know that i can ask them questions and vice versa.

edit- went ahead and edited my signature down to 1 line- no big deal. because of this, ive got a hightened awareness of everyone elses sig- and there are tons with up to 5 or 6 lines- mods included. lead by example!

Very good idea, so people dont have to leave it in their sig. Most other forums (not just for computers) have something similar. For example, this is from my Benzworld forum

Date registered: Aug 2006
Vehicle: 2002 ML500
Location: North Shore of Boston, MA

So, perhaps, my Thinkpad forum user info section would look like

And what happens to those who do not own a Thinkpad or are just looking for info: should they go without a signature?
