so for some reason i decided to start with a clean slate...

#1 Post by ENicolas1985 » Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:17 pm

... i decided since i bought the computer i would start with a clean one so i deleted the partition and installed windows xp pro. it was cool and all but i just noticed that now i dont have Microsoft Word. pshhh!! [censored]. anyone know where i can get a driver for that? and maybe power point? i tried searched and all i got were 'add-ons' and 'packs.' can anyone give me direct downloads?

:-\

oh and i have a t20; i dont know if that changes anything though.

p.s. another thing i was wondering is where i can get a dvd player codec for microsoft media player. i have a cdrw/dvdrom, but cant play dvds because it says i dont have the dvd codecs installed.

and yes... i did searched.

THANKS!!

ahhh, wait a minute! power point and word are proprietary programs. so you won't find any direct downloads. or if any, its ilegal !

with the dvd codec its the same. you need a dvd player softare, like windvd. maybe you can find a limited shareware version of this, with limited functions.

I am making preparations to do the same thing -- wipe my harddrive and reload Windows XP (from IBM Recovery CD).

What do I need to reload Windows Office?

You need a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) basically a software license and the media (CD)- and the CD key.

Barring that, there's always http://www.openoffice.org/ , a free office suite that has most of the functionality that Microsoft's Office has. I know quite a few people that use it. It's freeware (free to download, use, and distribute).

For DVD problem, you can always try the Software Installer from IBM, it will look for the latest drivers for your system, this will include stuff like video and audio drivers, bios and even stuff that was supposed to be installed. I know it will update the DVD player that was preinstalled on your machine. I think that if you have the DVD drive in your system that it will load it. It is worth a try. Here is the link to get to software installer.

Open Office really is quite good and will allow you to read and write Microsoft Office files. Can't beat the price ;).

As for playing DVDs I highly recommend the VLC player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - it handles nearly any video file flawlessly and will play DVDs just as well. Oh and it is free as well. Only downside is a less than thrilling interface, but that's all forgot once you are watching The Godfather on the train into work.

(do run the system update as well - very helpfull for fresh installs - adds all the nice ThinkPad utilities for power management and configuration)

If you want to play DVD's using Windows media player you just need to update to the latest version from Microsoft update. Version 10 will play DVD's no probs.

Cheers....
