Clicking gone...

#1 Post by qchaser » Fri Jun 30, 2006 5:24 pm

Just curious, has anybody else noticed that after the latest fw-update for the hard drive the clicking seems to be gone for good?

More info

Sorry guys, I thought first that my reply was going to the sticky-thread for X41 "clicking" subject...

I'm talking about X41 with 60G disk. And the fw-update I meant was:

Version: FWHD43
Release Date: 2006/06/19

Indeed, I did another flash for my wifes X41 and the clicking disappeared. However, I couldn't find any info from IBM site that what this fw-update is meant to upgrade/change?!

Q

Edit: Direct link for the update:

I just flashed my hard drive with the firmware. The clicking still haunts my system. Darn.

I did that couple day ago too. But that does not help either.

HOWEVER, after I dumped ZoneAlarm firewall and converted to Kerio firewall, the clicking is almost gone. I rarely hear the clicks though sometime, I still can hear a weak clicking every couple seconds.

I have to live with the curiousity about if this firmware would help me since I don't know anybody with a ultradock and USB CD-drives aren't supported.

But it seems this firmware aren't intended to remove the clicking.

By the way... I have the clicking no matter if I am in Windows or using a DOS utility and I have had my HDD switched at warranty and they sounded exactly the same.

TO upgrade a X41T machine or a machine without built-in CD drive, please check what I did.

I pulled off the HD, and installed the HD to my T43....and off it upgraded.

How?

I screwed off the caddy of T43, put it on the HD from the x41. But you have to put it on smartly so that the caddy will stick out as the HD from X41 is too short.

I do find that the HD is quieter but it still clicks somehow. But it is not that bad. I can barely hear actually unless I really pay attention to it.

thx for the tip bigtiger but I don't dare mess with my mom's T42. It is still under warranty and since it doesn't seem like the firmware update really helps a lot I don't care to make such a mess about it.

clicking

#12 Post by qchaser » Sun Jul 02, 2006 7:44 pm

Just curious, what type of clicking are we talking about?? I'm not a specialist with computers but I assume that a hard drive always keep some kind of "noice" and even that it is quite absurd to expect a 100% silent drive?? What type of noice I was talking about was "bang" like clicks that my hd did from time to time. These bangs were so loud that I could here them more than ten feet away. This could be described as annoying because everybody around me could here them too. If there was someone giving me "the look" I used to say that; well, the engine of a Rolls Royce is not the quietest either and in case you don't know this is THE Rolls Royce of laptops.

If the hd is rotating and there are several moving parts I assume that a drive can not be total silent? Or am I missing the point here?

I could describe these two X41's as whisper quiet now.

Now that you mention it, I applied that firmware a while ago and I tink I have not heard those very loud clicks any more.

No. Upgrading HDD firmware does not clear your data.
