Just bought my first laptop

#1 Post by bioyuki » Tue Aug 10, 2004 1:30 pm

After being recommended by friends and exhaustively reading this forum I ordered a 23733VU through my school today cause a desktop, as much as I love them, just don't cut it at school

1. My school is out of stock (IBM has very low stock as well I think) so ETA is at least 2 weeks for my laptop :(. Do you think by the time I get mine SP2 will be preinstalled?

2. I paid $1979.00 + 8.75% tax + 0.5% web handling fee for a total of $2162.00...is this a fair price for an educational discount?

3. Re: dead pixels, can anyone give me a concise answer as to how many dead pixels are needed before I can complain to IBM?

4. I would like to buy Thinkpad Protection on top of the included 3 year EasyServ warranty service but it says on IBM's site that in California it is for business accounts only. Is there anyway I can add Thinkpad Protection?

5. What should I expect when I pickup my laptop? So far I have, check for dead pixels, request Recovery CD from IBM, delete extraneous applications. Anything else?

TIA guys.

1. The shipping date is very pessimistic. Some have received theirs in half the time estimate. You'll definitely not receive SP2 as IBM would probably do through testing before including it with their shipping systems.

2. That's a very good price.

3. He answered your dead pixel question.

4. I've heard that it's difficult to add it once you've purchased your system already. You should ask IBM that yourself.

5. Don't forget to enjoy it! Seems like you're pretty well prepared.

You've never met the bureacracy that is my school. If it was shipping from IBM straight to me it wouldn't be an issue but it has to go through the sales people at my school...I'll count myself lucky if I get my laptop in 2 weeks.

That's a GREAT deal - much better than I got on a 23733xu (same price, lower spec). I also have a 2 week wait. So don't loose any sleep over it. If it has ANY dead pixels, I'd sent it back - you go straight to the begining of the order list for a replacement.

Oh, and you probably won't see XP2 for at least 3 months - IBM will have to customize it and it takes a while to get new code into "the system" (check the date of your BIOS - it'll be up to 3 months old).
