Restore to factory contents

#1 Post by popcorndrink » Sun Jul 02, 2006 11:13 am

Hi,

I am to restore my computer to factory contents. So on start-up I press "Access IBM" and then double-click "Restore to factory contents" but instead of restoring it gives me an error message saying "Application authentication has failed! This application cannot be loaded".

I've tried to google it with very few results. Please help me out :)

Try shutting down completely for 10 seconds, on reboot press f11.
It is possible you have a corrupted hpa, or it has been deleted or compromised. Check disk management to see if the hpa is still there, should show around 3-4gig partition.

There is a tool to fix damaged boot sector to allow access to the recovery partition.

I just tried to disable the security in the predesktop area and it SHOWS an unallocated partition on ~ 3 gigs. Hang on. I will try to press f11 now.

Alright, pressing f11 gives me some options. Either to start-up normally or enter the BIOS.

It should have taken you to the R&R environment, you may want to check out that link to the boot fixer.

Yikes, you can create a bootable CD, although I don't know the procedure, I bought a new usb floppy drive from tigerdirect for about $18.00.

You can also use Virtual Floppy if you want; See, http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmwar ... l#download

Technically, it should work for that. :)

If the MBR fixer program can boot from a floppy, it will probably come in a self-extracting *.exe that extracts the main 1.44MB image out onto drive somewhere. Just copy that image onto the virtual floppy then unmount it and then initiate the process of the MBR repair program writing to a boot floppy. After that, it should be able to boot from the virtual floppy image. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Well will a recovery CD fix the problem? I just need to restore to factory contents.

I have a T41.
