The "recovery CDs" do not simply restore an image, instead, they actually go though the process of installing all the programs again from scratch.
I used rescue and recovery with rapid restore 4.0 (RRwRR) and it does the same as RR 3.01, namely it creates an image of the actual hdd. But I have to admit I used this program on a T23, T40 and A31P and not on a T42- but it should be identical (?)

Anyway, hopefully Neil will reply.

That's only in the first 30 days.

Anyway - that's not my point. Why do most people need a factory set. Why don't people (especially people who have been reading these posts for the last 6 months) just burn a set when they get their machines? I can see how a few people could accidentally screw up and delete the factory configuration without burning the restore disks - but it seems like poeple are doing this on purpose!
Thats funny because it has been well passed 30 days for me and I suckered 2 sets from IBM at no cost, no questions asked. Infact, they never even asked me when I bought it...

AFAIK there is very little difference between them when it comes to the type of backup they do. Rescue and recovery obviously allows you to boot into the Recue and Recovery Pre-Desktop area - and the option to pull individual files off a backup much more easily.

Both versions of Rapid Restore are different to the option that is available on the newest machines (T42 (p), R51 and X40) which allows the user to create a set of Recovery CDs which will act like recovery CDs recived from IBM. These will "recover" the machine back to factory conditions - as it was "out of the box". Quite a useful option I think...

Thanks for your reply.

Can you confirm that the CDs created with RRwRR will also restore the HPA, resp. service partition, exactly as the IBM recover CDs do?

I don't think it does. It only performs a backup of the Windows image...

Recovery CDs

#36 Post by jnwest » Wed Oct 20, 2004 3:06 pm

Hi everyone,

I just purchased the R51. I haven't seen it yet, since my wife will be bringing back to Poland from the US. Could someone confirm that I can burn my own CD's instead of paying the whopping 45 bucks? I want to be sure that I can do this before my wife returns. Also, it came with a 30 gig hard drive, and I have a brand new 40 gig that I want to install in it's place. I have already done this on my T21 when the 20 gig crashed, so I'm sure the actual replacement is not difficult. If I do it myself, will this void the warranty? If not, what's the best procedure for trading it out and reloading all the software? Any help would be appreciated.
