Think I'll give it a try sometime, thanks.daba wrote: Opera 9 has all of these features. In fact, Opera 9 has a lot of features and pseudo-extensions Firefox has. See this list.
Windows users, what Internet browser do you use?
Yeah, it -can- get too crazy I guesschristopher_wolf wrote: You know; everytime I get to a site that is a flash orgy, I have to wonder to myself....Did they really need to make the entire content smaller and replace the browser scroll bar with a flash one? Might even get FlashML one of these days.

You should be able to scroll just fine; unless you changed something in the UltraNav wizard.ipark wrote:I just downloaded Opera 9 and it seems pretty nice but, can someone tell me why I can't scroll using the trackpoint or the touch pad? This seems only to be happening when I use opera 9.
Center button should be set to "Scrolling" for it to work; at least that is what it is set to on my system.

Thanks for the quik response Chris. I checked my UltraNav settings and everything is set to be working. I don't know why I can't scroll. I checked the Opera 9 forums and some others seem to be having the same problem with no resolution. I'm going to reinstall Opera once more and hopefully it'll work.christopher_wolf wrote:You should be able to scroll just fine; unless you changed something in the UltraNav wizard.ipark wrote:I just downloaded Opera 9 and it seems pretty nice but, can someone tell me why I can't scroll using the trackpoint or the touch pad? Still having the same problem. Oh well. I'm happy with FF

Just tried out Opera 9 aswell. And me likes.
The layout and design of the browser is definately better than FF, although they strike certain similarities.
The built in content blocker is a nice feature. However, I miss the option to have it block content on its own, without the user having to point the content out on every site he/she visits. This is expecially why I like FF with adblock and the filterset.G running.
Any way of achieving this in Opera?
Cause if there is, I would seriously consider converting to Opera. Its really good.
Speed is about the same as FF, in my opinion. Opera takes up the same memory (so far) with a few windows and tabs open.

I haven't tried the latest public version 9. I did try beta 9 a couple of months ago, and horizontal scrolling would not work for me. I would suggest uninstalling version 9 and installing version 8.54 instead. This is the version I use, and it supports scrolling in both directions. About the only thing I have noticed missing is the Widgets feature.ipark wrote:I just downloaded Opera 9 and it seems pretty nice but, can someone tell me why I can't scroll using the trackpoint or the touch pad? You can download all available versions from here:

ipark: Try googling the question? Also, you might want to try disabling smooth scrolling?
Torque: Afaik, that feature isn't availble as of now. But the lists of general adblocking works pretty well for me, and blocks most ads. Although, sometimes I do have to use the built-in image blocker and manually insert URL's to be blocked.

It seems to me much of the time that web page "design" in general has devolved into an orgy of "how many features and how much content can we cram into each page?". Sometimes, it makes it very difficult to surf at home on my dialup connection.christopher_wolf wrote:You know; everytime I get to a site that is a flash orgy, I have to wonder to myself....Did they really need to make the entire content smaller and replace the browser scroll bar with a flash one? I'm a software engineer by trade (I work mostly with real-time embedded systems), and while I can understand somewhat the desire to play with all the new bells and whistles, I sometimes get rather annoyed with these so-called web "designers" who assume that everyone has broadband all the time. Ever see a link to a "56K friendly" alternate page version any more? That little courtesy seems to be all but extinct.
The entire Internet (with some limited exceptions) seems to be quickly becoming disdainful/contemptous of, if not outright hostile to, folks on dialup connections with all the streaming audio/video, huge pitcures, etc., even though there's a lot of folks still using dialup.

Yup; at least we limit embedded images in most forums to prevent stuff like that. Most websites, however, don't. Unless there is a really good reason to have a huge file and tons of formatting, then it shouldn't be done.
Then again, there are enough shoddily designed sites that don't do any of those things to go around I suppose; just look at MySpace. I can guarantee you that 80% of the pages have a good chance of rendering differently depending on the browser you use. From zooming into ridiculously tiny text, to left-center-right text justification; and this is only Web 1.5, add on top Web 2.0, evil that it is, and you get far, far worse things.
I was on dialup for almost a decade, and I still use it occasionally for certain things. The more stuff that goes into a page, the higher the chance that different browsers will render it in a totally different way and will take slower doing so.

This issue with Firefox eating resources, it has to do with “Dynamic Memory Cache” or something. Google it for info and how to edit a couple of things and it is resolved.
Personally I use Firefox for about 2 years. The last 5 months I use Portable Firefox
http://portableapps.com/suite
from the portable suite. If you change drive/computer you just copy the folder and everything work without installation in the new computer, even from a flash stick drive.

If I need a compact browser on a portable stick, I usually use OffByOne. Not quite as feature filled as PFF, but it gets the job done in very few resources under some very secure connections quickly.wiresounds wrote:This issue with Firefox eating resources, it has to do with “Dynamic Memory Cache” or something. I use IE because I need something which really works, same reasons like jdhurst.
As for the security (which is favorite flame topic regarding IE), no browser can be considered secure due the complexity of JavaScript and other technologies. The only secure way is to run the browser with limited privileges.
There are two ways to accomplish that:
1. Be logged as restricted user most of the time. This is sufficient and recommended for most users.
2. If you have to be logged as an administrator I would recommend to use SAFER feature of Windows XP/2003. It allows to specify privileges for individual processes regardles of the privilege of current user, check Browsing the Web and Reading E-mail Safely as an Administrator article.

I have been a firefox user for 1 1/2 years and it is the best browser I have ever used. It is much more secure than IE (6 or 7 beta), and offers more features. Firefox 2 hopefully will fix the memory leak and offer even more features than every before. I will continue to use Firefox and never go back to IE.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I use Firefox simply because StumbleUpon doesn't work in Opera. Otherwise I love Opera's default mouse gestures and speedy browsing, and integrated resume browsing/crash resume.
Check out my SU page: http://projectdp.stumbleupon.com/
Let me know if you Stumble!
. People are too crazy with their sites I think. Focus needs to be on content quality for most sites. My site is in need of an update, which will come soon enough

I tried Opera and found it to be very fast and stable, but to have a rather strange interface. Firefox is simple and comfortable, making it my first choice on my Windows machine.
On my Macs I also use Firefox for certain sites that Apple Safari will not open, but other than when stuck, I use Safari.
What I really like is that with Firefox and Thunderbird my browser and email experience stays constant whether I'm working on my ThinkPad or my MacBook. Its nice to have things in the same place.

I am a Firefox user now, but when the next version of IE7 comes out I will be switching back over. Like it or not, ActiveX is very useful, and although alot of ActiveX functions can be accomplished using Java, most sites that use ActiveX provide no alternative. Plus, downloading off of MS' website is much easier with an ActiveX browser.
