ThinkPad on ICE
Has anybody use a T60P with a pack of ice ?
I had to encode a large video file and my TP was very hot
I used an ice bad (it is use for french wine)in order to cool it
Now the T60P is working twice faster

I would consider venting it more, perhaps getting a laptop cooler pad? What kind of surface are you using it on?
On the T4X Series, you could probably put a thin pad of dry ice in the insulated frame of a PCMCIA card and slip it in the bay; that would *really* help cool the system down.

I run assorted distributed computing @home apps (currently Seti and Einstein) 24x7 with my T40. When I'm not actively typing on it, I leave it sitting up like a tent on the front edges. Plenty of ventilation and no heat accumulation.

1)I agree
2)I am in Paris
Summer in Paris is very dry.
So it is OK for one month
But I should avoid using Ice Bag in humid and hot weather

targus makes a nice laptop cooling pad. its just a swivel base with little lego-like pieces so you can adjust the height to your liking. this type doesnt use fans like others. i never saw a difference with the ones with little fans measured in mm. when it gets hot, i have a small 9" round fan that i set up behind it to blow underneath, and the cpu temp will drop from 60C to under 40.

I use an X Pad. http://www.xpad4laptop.com/yves wrote:1)Where can I purchase a Pad ?
It's inexpensive, one piece, light and very easy to carry and use. Nothing to adjust, fits all laptops of all sizes. No downsides at all. Keeps my laptop nice and cool without any extra fans or other complications. I've tried others and this is far and away the best. Our summer months are 103 - 108F so cooling is important here.
Cheers...

i was looking at that one before i got the targus. the reasons i did were 1) back can go up to about 3", so the laptop has a nice ergonomic curve to work with 2) it swivels! 3) relating to 1, it has more room for air to circulate.
i was actually going to buy a usb crt cooling fan and mount it on the pad blowing at the computer, but wasnt quite sure how much power it would consume. using the 9" fan is ok when im stationary, but not exactly practical when moving around.

Yeah, but the T40 runs a lot cooler than even the T42...
My wife had a company T40 and I had a T42s (2373-K5H) bought with 6 mths of each other, and the T40 was basically cool--to the point that the fan don't even have to be on... basically silent...
My T42s on the other hand, was noticably warmer even when idle, and fan was on 50% of time (more if I start to work on it...)
