Sloppy repair by Solectron (pics)

#1 Post by bungopolis » Thu Jul 06, 2006 1:37 pm

I sent my T43 to Solectron in Memphis because of a vertical line of discoloration on my LCD. The service was very fast: sent on Monday afternoon, received on Thursday morning, and the repair was correct: a new LCD. The repair, however, was quite sloppy. The lower left panel is bent upwards (pictured) and all of the screw covers around the LCD were not replaced, although two are stuck to the enclosure in the wrong place (pictured). It's not as bad as some of the horror stories I've heard here from other Solectron repairs, but it's pretty annoying nonetheless. Is it worth sending it back to correct these mainly aesthetic problems, or should I get a screwdriver to push the panel back in place and get used to the bare screws?

I'm finding it very difficult to get that panel back in place - does anyone have any advice for doing it? It has a plastic flap that would keep it in place, but it's currently stuck on top and I can't bend the panel enough to get it to snap in.

Do NOT force it in place; it is not designed to "snap in". The proper way to do it is to remove the keyboard, then the palmrest, and then reinstall them. The disassembly instructions and the location and type of screws are here:

Watch the movie http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50233 (scroll to the bottom) to remove the palm rest and reinstall it correctly. It's not too hard to do.
Call IBM and tell them about the screw covers and they will probably send you a set.

DO NOT bend..
disassemble and reassemble..
screws on the bottom..

the vertical line was from water damage..??
i think, if this was done under warranty, that you got a free pass as they usually want $1000~ for anything that might be related to customer abuse..

if not customer abuse, leave the pics, i want any ibm/lenovo people to see what solectron does to a perfectly good thinkpad..

I've repaired it by unscrewing and reassembling. Thanks for the links. I will be calling to see if I can get them to send me a bag of screw covers.

Rock on dude... they got me too a few months ago... hopefully if all the bad stuff is right in front of their face, things will shape up.

Perhaps a new forum should be opened here specifically for Lenovo/Solectron support issues to keep better track of the problems and hopefully encourage some changes?

It is mainly Solectron's fault.

By the way, there is a Solectron Facility south of here a ways; perhaps I should give thought to Making Them an Offer They Couldn't Refuse? ;) :)

You should definetly give them an offer they can't refuse. Although I don't know what putting a horse's head in their facility will do.

I think that is a great idea!

Solectron really sucks. Their techs are either on drugs or, more likely, under so much time pressure that they just cannot manage to do a relatively simple job competently with the required attention to detail.

It could not hurt to highlight these issues in a way that hopefully will eventually get the attention of the people who have the power and ability to fix these problems.
