One row of pink pixels on lcd when opening

#1 Post by awdark » Thu Jul 06, 2006 4:18 pm

If I apply pressure to the top right corner like to open or close the LCD, I get a weird pink line 1 pixle wide, 768 pixels long. Once I let go it will go away.
It doesn't seem to cause the line if I open it on the left or center.

Anyone know the cause?
Is it the ribbon? Is it the LCD being warped too much?
Does pushing it close from the thinkpad logo corner flex the controller board or something?

=[ I don't want a row of pink... so I want to know the cause.

Thank you

I would say if it's only one column (or row), then you are putting pressure on one of the thin-film transistors (TFT) inside the LCD panel, which is causing it to turn on (or off; not sure which it is at the moment) when it's not supposed to. I don't believe there is any electronics (i.e. circuit board) in the T series panels to bend or warp, so what's happening is the panel itself is flexing. If there was a problem with the ribbon cable I think it would affect sections of your display and not a single pixel, row or column.

It may be that sooner or later that the pixel column will "die" and it will permanently be on. I've got two panels from 600X systems like that because my daughter is doing something to kill them. Haven't figured out if she is stacking something on the lid when it's closed or she's slamming it down.

(edit: P.S... the weird light in your display... is it reddish/pinkish? If so, that's usually an indication that the CCFL tube is reaching the end of its life.)

Oh :? not good.
So it has to be the ribbons around the LCD then and not just the main ribbon....
Guess this is when the age of the thing really shows.

The backlight thing is actually a flaw in one of the layers of the lightbox. (you know several layers of plastic film behind the LCD? well for some reason it cracked and it distributes light there weirdly)
