Bios chip location
Bios chip location
Well I was lookin at the board and seems that there was a chip that has been crappily soldered onto. Its right under the Mini PCI (red circle). I desoldered the chip and will resolder it back on. I Can make out the top words "atmel" which im thinking is the bios chip. Am i right? also, if anyone knows about these boards, is there another chip that goes next to the bios chip (blue circle)

That link isn't showing the image, by the way.
Atmel makes a bunch of ASICs and Microcontrollers and many Thinkpads have those chips in them. Most likely, though, you are probably dealing with the EEPROM. The BIOS is from Phoenix and the EC is a Hitachi/Renesas H8S.
What Thinkpad model is this by the way?

its a t41 model. and oops i meant the security chip, not bios. could it be the same as the ones they sell on ebay? seems like a few of the legs on the chip broke off and its gona be harder to solder it back on so i wanna get a new one.

If I recall correctly, that isn't the security-subsystem chip and the chips that are missing from there are fairly small. If you have the ability, you *might* be able to solder it back on, but I wouldn't count on that. If it *was* the ESS chip, you would be SOL as, once the ESS chip is removed from the system board, that is essentially it and it will not function in another board and that board won't function without it.tnynyn wrote:sorry didnt know about the image thing. heres another link
