Dead A31? Freezing Issue

#1 Post by Vig1980 » Fri Jul 07, 2006 9:51 am

Hi All,

My A31 seems to have dies on me but I wanted to check whether this was defintely the case:

Everything works fine except that it will at some point, sometimes after 10 mins somtimes longer / shorter, it will freeze. I can do nothing at all not even ctrl alt del - NOTHING.

I have reformatted, opened up and cleaned up the PC. Checked the heat generated from the CPU. There seems to be nothing connected to the freezing. I have formatted 3 times now to no avail.

Is this a common problem with older laptops and is there a remedy?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Check memory seating.
If memory is ok, then maybe the HD or the motherboard
are to blame.

Do you hear a repetitive "clicking" sound when it freezes?
I invented the cordless extension cord!

I have the same problem in my A31p. I have upgraded the fan, chekced the memory and HDD and it still does not work properly. What else can I do besides change the motherboard?

Most likely, it's a memory or HDD problem, but the next thing I'd try is to make sure it's not a software problem -- a bad driver or an app running in the background. Try booting up in safe mode and see if it will keep running after the +/- 10 minute mark where it's been freezing.

I have tried two HDDs and have taken one memory stick out and then took the other stick out. It still froze. Also, I have formatted many times.

Well I tried Safe Mode. I opened up the calculator and had it find 9999999999999999! (factorial). Of course this would take a long time to calculate, but it got the CPU running at 100%. I left it for 20 minutes and it stayed alive the whole time. However, I have tried many things including installing Windows Server 2003 fresh and it still froze on me when not in safe mode. The fact that it was able to withstand that calculation tells me the motherboard should be OK... What could it be then?

Have you checked Event Viewer for error messages?

Alright, in the event viewer I am getting these errors:

4609
8193

Do any of you know how to fix these?

Those errors seem to only come up when I am in safe mode, so I doubt that it is what is causing the comp to freeze (it does not freeze in safe mode). I have also tried different OSs like Windows Server 03 and it still freezes.

The fact it works in safe mode tells me it is not the motherboard (i think)...
