Help me pick out a T40 (or similar model)

#1 Post by Fergy » Sun Jul 09, 2006 11:43 am

Hello,

I'm new to the thinkpad world. :D

I have owned two laptops, and build desktop PCs as a hobby.

I have been searching on here, on Ebay, etc. and trying to find a good model of the T40. I'm used to AMD CPUs, so I'm not too "up" on the differences between the Pentium M, Centrino, etc.

Would I be correct in saying the Pentium M is the fasetest CPU option for the T40?

Also, what's the max supported speed of RAM for the T40s? I am sorta stuck between buying an X31 or a T40.

Advice? :)

Welcome to the forums! :)

The only difference between Pentium M and Centrino is that Centrino based laptops have Intel chipset, CPU and wireless adaptor. Something that is just a Pentium M has a non-Intel wireless adaptor. The Pentium M (Banias) is the only stock option for CPU as well.

And the T40 supports a maximum speed of PC2100, although you can install PC2700 RAM which will run at the slower speed.

HTH - from personal experience with my T40 (which I bought 2nd hand back in April) I can't recommend it highly enough!

It is much as Kristian said. You can only have a "True" Centrino platform if you also have the wireless card and, possibly, the Intel graphics adapter as well. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
