Deciding the World Cup on a penalty kick shoot out makes no sense. It's like deciding an extra inning baseball game or overtime football, basketball or hockey game by having the managers play "rock, paper, scissors".
Which may be why soccer will never be a big spectator sport in the USA.

Let me get this right, you think that this is like playing "rock, paper, scissors" and that the reason that soccer will never be a spectator sport in the NOrth America?dsvochak wrote:Deciding the World Cup on a penalty kick shoot out makes no sense. Seems you and this guy and these guys all agree . . .
But in the final analysis, another couple of bilion people in the rest of the world who watched that amazing final this afternoon, "rock, paper, scissors" and all, me included, simply don't seem to care what people in the North America think . . .
We just love the game.

The referreeing needs needs a major overhaul though!smugiri wrote:We just love the game.
The number of poor decisions (the degree of simulation that went unpenalised etc), and outright mistakes (3 yellow cards before a send off) etc displayed at the peak level of the game is very disturbing!
Cheers,
Bill
No, he specifically said in the USA Steve!smugiri wrote:Let me get this right, you think that this is like playing "rock, paper, scissors" and that the reason that soccer will never be a spectator sport in the NOrth America?
Unless Canada has somehow physically removed itself from North America?
Watching soccer is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

You play the game until someone wins.
If you're not going to do that, rock paper scissors is about as good a way as a penalty kick shoot out to decide who is the best team.
Well, you didn't. I just said a penalty kick shoot out isn't the way the World Cup should be decided.Let me get this right

Actually, until recently (maybe 2002 or some point very close to that, I am not certain about dates), soccer games that ended in draws were decided by using the "golden goal" approach. For some reason they changed it.
And yes, while he did say USA, I added Canada into the mix since people here seem to have the same type of apathy towards soccer . . .
I cannot cannot cannot understand why anyone who would watch a 4 hour baseball game, where they actually have a designated rest period for fans - NOT PLAYERS BUT FANS - would complain about a soccer game . . .
But it could be me . . .
Sorry, it could be all 2 or so billion of us . . .

Oh...maybe it is; after all, real excitement and mental activity in a game do make most people tired after awhile.smugiri wrote: I cannot cannot cannot understand why anyone who would watch a 4 hour baseball game, where they actually have a designated rest period for fans - NOT PLAYERS BUT FANS - would complain about a soccer game . . .

Although I admit I am a bit puzzled at how a thread about who is going to win the World Cup, and we already know the winners, can turn into such absolutely *juicey* fla...active material and my "Editors at War" thread has to be pushed along like a Yugo up an incline with a PB&J sandwich in its carburetor. Beaten at a lively discussion by an old Who is Going to Win the World Cup thread...I mean, what do you have to do???
That is almost like losing to Italy, France....or England.
Now *here* is an exciting game! ( http://widelec.org/zidane.html )

All I meant was a penalty kick shoot out is a dumb way to decide the World Cup. But since you've raised the issue:
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the [censored] plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." Earl Weaver, Manager Baltimore Orioles, HOF
He's referring to American Football, but it applies to Football in the rest of the world.

That was actually a good call.Kyocera wrote:It was all over the radio today, mostly because some guy head butted some other guy who rolled around on the ground, and the other guy got thrown out, which apparently brought the excitement level of the game to never before seen heights!
The red card ejection was for over-acting!

But it seems there is a lot more to this than meets the eye.
It seems non-European players have a very rough time on European soccer pitches, check out this ESPN special from just before the world cup. Even more interesting is the fact that this piece is from ESPN since the European media and governments loath to deal with racial issues like these.
