hard drive vibration? Fujitsu 80GB 5400RPM

#1 Post by bcomisky » Mon Jul 10, 2006 12:58 pm

I just received my new x60s and am happy with everything but the vibration I'm getting from the hard drive. It is very noticable through the handrest and keyboard, actually anywhere I touch the laptop. By comparison my old sony vaio has almost no vibration. I made sure it was the disk by removing it and then booting to the BIOS, vibration gone. Note that there is no noise readily detectable, just vibration.

The drive is a Fujitsu 80GB 5400RPM drive, with P/N 39T2640.
Is this normal for the x60s with this drive? What about other drives?

Any first hand experience welcomed, as I hope I can replace this drive to fix the issue.

thanks,
Bill

I don't believe this is normal, but it may not be unique either. Do a search in this forum for vibration.

The only things I saw in the forums were about a different model (and that post got no responses) and a few comments about increased vibration in the 7200 RPM drives. No qualitative description of vibration with a 5400 RPM in the x60s.

My x60s has a 60Gb Fujitsu (5400rpm) and it does not vibrate as I can notice. I recently removed it and reinstalled it and it was the same after as before.
I can't speak for the 80Gb drive, sorry.

I checked a couple of X60s models we have at the office with the same drive as yours and they are quiet and display absolutely no vibration.

I might suggest that you take advantage of the 30 day return policy and send it back for a new computer.

Thanks for the feedback.. I ended up just getting a replacement drive, and the vibration is reduced (to a low hum through my wrists/fingers) but still present. My feeling is that this will grate on my nerves when I know from your feedback and others that it's possible to have "absolutely no vibration". So now I'm looking at a return and wondering how this will affect the rebate I've already mailed in. :(

I wish there were a reseller in Chicago where I could get my hands on an x60 for comparisons sake.. but I can't find anything online, anybody know of one? My old Vaio has in comparison no vibration, but that's apples to oranges.

it could be also related to the surface/table you are placing the X60s on. I usualy dont sense ANY vibration when i use it on my work table, but on one instance I placed it on a small tea table and I do feel noticable vibrations, I can image that only comes from HD.
